Fabrieksteam Renault factor bij keuze Red Bull voor Honda

Red Bull Racing verlaat na twaalf seizoenen motorleverancier Renault. Een belangrijke trigger voor dat besluit was het fabrieksteam dat het Franse merk sinds 2016 weer heeft, gaf teambaas Christian Horner in Frankrijk toe.

Sinds 2007 was Red Bull een klantenteam van Renault. De samenwerking leidde tot vier kampioenschappen voor coureurs en vier voor constructeurs. Eerder deze week kondigde het Oostenrijkse team aan dat de samenwerking beëindigd wordt na dit seizoen, waarna de energiedrankjesfabrikant met Honda-motoren gaat rijden in 2019.

'Winnen met klantenmotor is mogelijk'

Horner legde op Paul Ricard uit hoe het besluit tot stand kwam. "We hebben vier verschillende managements voorbij zien komen in onze tijd met Renault. De route was onconventioneel, maar succesvol. Het liet zien dat je kan winnen met een klantenmotor. Wij demonstreerden dat met 150 podia en 57 zeges, terwijl we voor elke motor betaald hebben."

"Onze blik op de toekomst is anders nu Renault een eigen fabrieksteam heeft", vervolgt Horner. "De motoren zijn tegenwoordig natuurlijk erg complex, dus de integratie ervan wordt gericht op dat team. We zijn allemaal zelfstandig in deze wereld. Je wil je focussen op de zaken die goed zijn voor je eigen team. Deze relatie geeft Honda de kans om een samenwerking aan te gaan die gericht en uniek is voor Red Bull, in plaats van dat deze gedeeld wordt."

'Goed moment om partnerschap te beëindigen'

"De prioriteiten van Renault liggen natuurlijk bij hun eigen team en dat hoort ook zo. Wat ons betreft is het na twaalf jaar een goed moment om een van de langste partnerschappen in de Formule 1 te beëindigen. Het was geen eenvoudige beslissing, want er is veel onderzoek en analyse naar gedaan. We hebben besloten dat dit de juiste richting is voor de toekomst van ons team en bedrijf."

Toekomstgericht? De komende 2 jaar dus. Eerst maar de nieuwe regels voor 2021 afwachten en welke nieuwe fabrikanten willen toetreden.

  echter veel verschil zal nie zijn, alleen die mgu-h verdwijnt? momenteel renault zowel honda en de rest om die ice te versterken... ieder nieuw motor bouwer zal zoiezo de zelfde problemen hebben zoals honda heeft gehad

Uiteraard, een fabrieksteam van Renault verlegt de focus daar op dat team. Goed dat RBR nu een eigen fabrikant heeft in Honda.

Het gaat om maatwerk en details die RBR door overleg en nauwe samenwerking met Honda uiteindelijk de beste resultaten zal opleveren. Renault zal meer en meer hun eigen gang gaan, en dan wordt het uiteindelijk voor RBR steeds lastiger om zich aan te moeten blijven passen en het verschil te maken tov het Renault fabrieksteam die hun eigen filosofie en ontwerp voorop stellen. Daar gaat Mclaren straks ook nog wel last van ondervinden.

  Alleen zegt Horner dat het wel mogelijk is.
  Zelfs dit seizoen kan, of kon RBR voor de titel gaan.
  Ze hebben redelijk wat punten laten liggen reeds.
  Hij spreekt zichzelf toch ook wel tegen.

  Ben het daar niet mee eens @Stoffelman. Red Bull is dit jaar niet meer dan een outsider. En zonder de status van fabrieksteam lijkt het ook niet mogelijk om titelkandidaat te zijn. De keuze voor Renaul is een overwogen lange termijn stap en ziet er veelbelovend uit. Zodra de Honda motor ook maar in de buurt van de Mercedes komt, doet Red Bull serieus mee.

Dit roep ik al een tijdje, dat Renault weer met een eigen fabrieksteam is begonnen was het begin van het einde van de samenwerking tussen Red Bull en Renault.. Volgens Horner zit er nagenoeg geen verschil meer tussen Renault en Honda qua prestaties, dus dan is de overstap logisch.. Bij Honda wordt de motor wel weer grotendeels naar de wens van Red Bull gebouwd..

Honda heeft gewoonweg veel meer te bieden dan Renault en de toekomst zal uit wijzen of Renault met een eigen team zo ver zal komen als ze met RBR gedaan hebben maar ik ben bang van niet .

De keuze voor Honda is begrijpelijk. Er was gewoon geen andere keuze. Fabrieksteam Renault zal de komende jaren nog meer privileges krijgen tov de klantenteam(s). 2019 en 2020 zouden wel eens tussenjaren kunnen worden voor Red Bull want Volkswagen ligt ook om de hoek om in 2021 groots in te stappen. Helaas voor Max maar ik verwacht niet dat hij de jongste wereldkampioen ooit zal worden als gevolg van de laatste ontwikkelingen, die kans was met Renault ook nihil geweest. In 2021 of 2022 geef ik hem meer kans.
