Di Grassi: "Alles in dienst van terugkeer in Formule 1 in 2012"

Lucas di Grassi is zijn plek in de Formule 1 na één jaar alweer kwijt. Met nieuwkomer Virgin Racing kon de debutant in 2010 geen potten breken. De Britse renstal gaf zijn stoeltje voor 2011 aan de Belg Jerome D'Ambrosio. De oorzaak daarvoor is volgens Di Grassi duidelijk. Virgin Racing had een betalende coureur nodig en ik had geen geld, aldus de Braziliaan tegenover Autosport.

Over zijn plannen voor de toekomst zegt hij: Het plan is om dit jaar in de Formule 1 te blijven als test- en reservecoureur. Ik ben in gesprek met enkele teams en op zoek naar de beste oplossing. Het gaat daarbij niet alleen om 2011, maar ook om de kans om in 2012 mijn rentree te maken. De beste strategie is om te praten met teams waar ik kans maak op een racezitje na dit jaar. Het heeft geen nut om alleen onderdak voor 2011 te vinden en dan volgende winter weer met hetzelfde probleem te zitten.

Het is niet uitgesloten dat ik een rol zal vertolken bij Virgin Racing. Het probleem was puur van commerciële aard wat betreft een racestoeltje en het team weet dat ik van waarde ben voor de ontwikkeling van de auto. Maar voorwaarde is dan wel dat ik in 2012 weer terug kom. Het is vandaag de dag lastig om zonder steun een plek te veroveren. Ik werk hard voor een goede uitgangspositie voor volgend jaar. Mocht zich nog iets aandienen voor dit jaar, dan zou dat een aangename verrassing zijn.

Nou, dan moet je als een gek de lege flessen gaan sparen en die inleveren anders gaat 2012 het niet worden.

een coureur waarvan er nog honderden zijn... als ze een niet betalende coureur willen kiezen ze eerder voor hulkenberg dan voor zo iemand...

Zonde. Di Grassi is een prima coureur, en dat heeft hij in de GP2 wel bewezen. Wat mij betreft beter dan Senna en Chandhok.
