De tijd dat Sauber de rode lantaarn meedroeg in de Formule 1 lijkt nu echt voorbij te zijn. Het hele seizoen zit het Zwitserse team er al redelijk goed bij en ook in Oostenrijk was dat op vrijdag het geval.

Charles Leclerc trekt duidelijk de kar voor Sauber. De Ferrari-junior, die in verband wordt gebracht met een zitje aldaar in 2019, was ook op vrijdag sneller dan zijn teamgenoot Marcus Ericsson. De Monegask werd negende en twaalfde, de Zweed elfde en veertiende.

"In het algemeen was het een positieve dag voor ons", vertelde Leclerc na de vrije trainingen. "Onze snelheid is behoorlijk goed en we hebben ons geplande programma afgerond. Het was productief om de verschillende banden te testen. Ik hou ervan om op dit circuit te racen en het is fijn om hier voor het eerst met een Formule 1-auto te rijden. We kijken naar de data, zodat we zaterdag in beide sessies goed erbij zitten. Wat er mogelijk is, gaan we zien."

"We hebben een mooie hoeveelheid ronden kunnen rijden en we hebben alle bandencompounds van dit weekend getest", analyseert Ericsson zijn vrijdag. "We borduren voort op wat we in Frankrijk geleerd hebben, met een setup die mijn rijstijl goed ligt. Vandaag zaten we in het middenveld en dat is positief. Vanavond werken we aan het optimaliseren van alles, zodat we morgen sterk voor de dag komen."

  Ik weet het niet hoor. Hij is nu 179 cm maar ook wel behoorlijk uitgegroeid. Denk niet dat hij de 200cm gaat halen. Maar dat is mijn verwachting.

  Toch is het vooral de auto. Ericsson faalt het hele seizoen maar als ie geen fouten maakt zit ie vlak achter Leclerc. Die Sauber is zo slecht nog niet.
