Valtteri Bottas: "De auto voelde geweldig na de upgrades"

Valtteri Bottas pakte op magistrale wijze zijn vijfde pole position uit zijn carrière. De Fin was de hele kwalificatie al erg sterk maar wist met een uitstekende laatste ronde, de snelste tijd van het weekend te rijden met 1:03.130. Daarmee hield hij teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton nipt achter zich. Met de laatste upgrades lijken de Mercedessen weer veruit de sterksten van het veld, aangezien naaste concurrent Ferrari meer dan drie tienden moest toegeven.

Valtteri Bottas stond tijdens de top drie interviews dan ook te glunderen op start-finish: "Het hele weekend hebben we vooruitgang weten te boeken. We hadden dit weekend flink wat upgrades meegenomen en hadden wat tijd nodig om daarmee de optimale balans te vinden, maar dat is vandaag gelukt. De auto voelde geweldig vandaag en voor de laatste run wist ik dat er nog een tiende te winnen viel. Gelukkig is het me gelukt om die extra tiende te vinden, want die was nodig om Lewis achter me te houden."

Voor de tweede keer op een rij start Mercedes met beide auto's op de eerste rij, hopelijk voor Bottas levert het dit keer echter een andere uitkomst om dan vorige week op Paul Ricard. Daar zag de Fin een podiumfinish in rook opgaan na een aanvaring met Vettel in de eerste bocht.
