Williams-top ziet verandering in leiderschap niet zitten ondanks kritiek

Claire Williams en technisch directeur van Williams Paddy Lowe zien geen brood in een verandering in leiderschap bij het noodlijdende team. Zowel Williams als Lowe geven toe dat de huidige jaargang dramatisch verloopt, maar volgens het duo gaan nieuwe leiders daar geen verandering in brengen.

In een interview met The New York Times gaf Williams toe dat 2018 'Tamelijk dramatisch' verloopt. "Als iemand me afgelopen jaar verteld had hoe dit seizoen eruit zou komen te zien, dan zou ik doodsbang geweest zijn. Dit zagen we niet aankomen. Het is alsof we in rouw zijn."

Toch blijft de teambaas op de vlakte wanneer het aankomt op een verandering in leiderschap. "Je kijkt constant naar het team om er zeker van te zijn dat het zo effectief mogelijk opereert en soms is het dan nodig om lastige beslissingen te nemen."

Technisch directeur Lowe ziet een verandering niet zitten. "Ik heb een aantal geweldige mensen om me heen", aldus Lowe. "Er zijn wat versterkingen nodig, maar in de basis hebben we een uitstekend team, dus ik denk dat we in de positie zijn om de situatie om te keren."

    Williams is eigenaar. Waarom zou die opstappen? Dat slaat nergens op.
    Dat relatief nieuweling Lowe blijkbaar bij Williams zoveel te vertellen heeft over dit soort essentiële beleidszaken, binnen wat toch nog steeds een familie-team is, zegt me wel genoeg over de autoriteit van Claire.
    Die is niet erg groot nu.

    Een andere structuur en een andere rol en positie van eigenaresse Claire zou wellicht verstandig zijn. Lowe zou in theorie een goede aanvulling moeten zijn binnen het team met al zijn kennis en ervaring, maar kennelijk heeft hij ergens de plank flink mis geslagen en ik vraag me af hoeveel toekomst hij nog binnen het team zou moeten hebben

      Als je een beetje ziet hoe het de laatste tijd reilt en zeilt bij Williams, dan zit het er dik in dat Claire Williams straks Lowe gaat aanwijzen als eindverantwoordelijke. Dan doet Williams afstand van het grootste aandeel, en dan gaan ze nog een paar jaartjes verder, misschien onder een andere naam, totdat er helemaal geen leven meer in zit.
      En dan trekken ze de stekker eruit.

    Typische gedachte van de top/management. Die hebben meestal oogkleppen op en denken dat zij alles goed doen. Ik kan het weten, aangezien ik mij bezig hou met verandermanagement.

    Zelf inzicht ontbreekt totaal bij Williams tijd voor een crisismanager die de boel goed opschoond. Claire bemoeit zich niet meer met de werkvloer gewoon algemeen directeur en het directe werk overlaten aan de vakmensen. Lowe heeft veel kennis maar kan zijn functie niet waarmaken. Wel tijd dus voor een ander.
