Renault onder druk in kampioenschap door bandenvretende auto

Renault beschikt over een auto die te agressief omgaat met de banden. Dat schrijft Auto Motor und Sport. De Franse renstal is genoodzaakt om met hardere banden te rijden dan de concurrentie, omdat het team anders niet in staat is om races uit te rijden met één pitstop. Tot de Grand Prix van Japan blijft Renault de auto ontwikkelen, om alsnog de vierde positie in het constructeurskampioenschap veilig te kunnen stellen.

Auto Motor und Sport schrijft dat de Renault RS18 een bandenvretende machine is, waardoor het team tijdens de races met hardere bandencompounds rijdt. Renault's concurrenten Force India en Haas rijden wel met zachtere banden, waardoor zij in races de overhand dreigen te krijgen. Hierdoor kan de strijd in het constructeurskampioenschap spannender worden.

Om toch die felbegeerde vierde stek te kunnen behalen, werkt men in Enstone met man en macht aan de aerodynamica van de auto. Zo moet er op Spa Francorchamps een nieuwe bodemplaat geïntroduceerd worden, terwijl er ook hard wordt gewerkt aan de C-specificatie van de motor.

Volgens technisch directeur Nick Chester blijft Renault tot de Grand Prix van Japan doorwerken aan het huidige chassis, terwijl de concurrentie over het algemeen sneller overschakelt op de ontwikkeling van de auto voor het komende seizoen. "Veel van wat we in 2018 introduceren en leren, kunnen we meenemen naar komend jaar", vertelt Chester. "Dit ondanks de reglementswijzigingen."

Ik denk niet dat FI echt een concurrent blijft. Williams, TR, McLaren en Sauber ook niet. Haas daarentegen gaat straks hoge ogen gooien, maar of de banden daar de bepalende factor in zijn betwijfel ik. Die Ferrari motor is gewoon zoveel beter dan de Renault dat het bijna zielig wordt.

Ben benieuwd wanneer Renault haar doelstelling om in 2020 een gooi naar de titel te doen zal bijstellen.

  Die was al bijgesteld naar 4e plaats 'best of the rest' in afwachting van de budgetcap. Ze hopen hiermee voordeel te halen door zich niet te hoeven aanpassen in spenderingen of later te hoeven downsizen.
  Met de snelle ontwikkeling van onder andere Ferrari en daardoor ook haar klantentrams komt ook nu de 4e plek in gevaar. Het protest tegen een Mercedes-B teams kan je dan ook in dit licht zien.
  Google even op 'Renault won't just bankroll team until it matches F1's top three' en je komt een artikel uit mei tegen waarbij men de doelstelling 'best of the rest' uit de doeken doen.

Komt dit van de data die ze verzamelen van RBR? Zoeken ze naar de rondetijden van RBR, maar slaan ze de plank mis met de aerodynamica?

Tja als Renault nu nog 'partner' was van Red Bull had Newey zonder al teveel info vrij te willen geven best wel even kunnen kijken en met een simpele oplossing kunnen komen
