Vanaf de Grand Prix van Italië en iedere race daarna gaan we een historische crash op het desbetreffende circuit onder de loep nemen. Voor de Grand Prix op Monza hebben we gekozen voor de crash van Derek Warwick in 1990.

Het seizoen 1990 stond bol van de zware ongelukken. Iedereen kan zich de klap van Martin Donnelly in de Camel Lotus op Jerez nog wel herinneren. Drie weken eerder crashte teamgenoot Derek Warwick op Monza tijdens de openingsronde van de race.

Kijkende naar de crash was op beelden duidelijk te zien dat Warwick ietwat te ver aan de buitenkant van de bocht zat. Warwick kwam op het vuile gedeelte van de baan terecht, kon de bocht niet meer halen en crashte hevig tegen de vangrail aan.

De impact was zo hard dat de Lotus van Warwick bij de impact al op zijn kant kwam. Honderden meters schoof de gele Lotus over het rechte stuk. Achteropkomende rijders hadden geluk dat ze de schuivende Warwick niet raakte.

Ergens was het ongelooflijk dat Warwick zonder kleerscheuren uit het wrak kon stappen. De veiligheid standaard was in de jaren '90 niet zo goed als hedendaags. Men had niet de beschikking over het HANS systeem en de zijkanten van de cockpit waren veel lager.

Toch was deze crash er eentje die achteraf gezien een oorzaak zou zijn van het aanpassen van de circuits. In 1991 kwam het Formule 1 circus terug op Monza, maar de Italianen hadden geen noodzaak genomen van de gevaarlijke vangrail aan het einde van de bocht.

Het zou nog jaren duren voordat de uitloopstrook bij de laatste bocht op de schop ging. Veiligheid is de afgelopen jaren een steeds nadrukkelijker item geworden in de hoogste klasse van de autosport. Maar klappen zoals die van Warwick op Monza in 1990 blijven voor de echte liefhebber een lust voor het oog, al was het alleen al vanwege de goede afloop.

  Honderden is gewoon een meervoud van honderd. Dus dat begint bij 200 meter. Honderden is in deze juist gebruikt.

  Precies coureurs schroomden er niet om om meerdere wielen buiten de lijntjes te kleuren. Ik zou het spannender vinden om de bocht weer met gras naast de baan te zien. Als het in bv. Suzuka kan, kan het in Monza ook met wat vangrail aanpassingen.

Toen was de Parabolica tenminste nog een échte bocht waar coureurs met ballen het verschil konden maken. Nu is het slechts nog een lauwe mok water met een ranzig bouillonblokkie erin.

Die vangrail scheidde het rechte stuk van de oude ovaal die daar weer aansloot op het circuit. Dat gedeelte werd toen gebruikt voor dragraces.

  ja 1978 idd, blijft klote hoe dat zo is kunnen escaleren, het waren uiteindelijk complicaties die hem fataal werden zo jmr.
  
  Rijden was wss ook wel gedaan beide benen van Ronnie waren er zeer slecht aan toe hij was toen ook al 34 geloof ik.

Hoewel ik de Formule 1 pas sinds 1994 ben gaan echt ben gaan volgen, kan ik me deze crash nog wel goed herinneren. Waarschijnlijk kwam het gewoon langs in Studio Sport. Gelukkig kwam Warwick er goed mee weg. Overigens. Lotus-Lamborghini. Dat klinkt wel lekker moet ik zeggen :)
