Formule 1 ziet E-Sports als Olympische kans

De Formule 1 ziet E-Sports graag terug op de Olympische Spelen. Het IOC heeft E-Sports vorig jaar erkend als een sportactiviteit en er zullen tijdens de Aziatische Spelen van 2022 medailles voor uitgedeeld worden. Ook de Formule 1 wil hier werk van gaan maken.

"We willen nieuwe dingen uitproberen. Dingen waar we als Formule 1 nog nooit over hebben nagedacht", zegt de commerciële baas van de Formule 1, Sean Bratches. "Ik wil er graag over praten. Ik zie de voordelen ervan in en eigenlijk doen onze virtuele rijders hetzelfde als de coureurs op de baan."

Ook Zak Brown van McLaren ziet mogelijkheden. "Ik denk dat het een geweldig idee is om jonge mensen, mannen en vrouwen achter het stuur te zetten. Er zijn genoeg goede E-sporters in onze sport. E-Sports moet daarom groter en meer wereldwijd worden. Want voor de elektrische karts is nog steeds maar een kleine doelgroep."
