Sainz wil 'positief gevoel omzetten in goed weekend' in Singapore

In België lukte het hem niet, maar in Italië behaalde Carlos Sainz enigszins onverwacht vier punten. Dat positieve resultaat neemt de Renault-coureur mee naar Singapore, waar hij vorig jaar knap vierde werd.

Sainz en Renault zijn hoopvol voor de race op het stratencircuit van Marina Bay. Het circuit zou de auto goed moeten liggen, waardoor meestrijden om de punten goed mogelijk moet zijn. Dat dat lukte op Monza, was toch redelijk verrassend. De Renault R.S.18 moet het niet hebben van circuits waar topsnelheid belangrijk is, maar met een achtste plaats scoorde Sainz toch goed. Hij kijkt uit naar de race op Singapore, die hij als een van de zwaarste van het seizoen bestempelt.

"Singapore is waarschijnlijk de zwaarste race van het jaar, zeker wat betreft het weer en de fysieke eisen van het circuit zelf. Het wordt heel warm in de cockpit en we zijn erg druk met de vele richtings- en versnellingswisselingen, terwijl we niet in de muur willen komen. Dat is op de racedag een grote uitdaging. Het rondje duurt lang, het is smal en bochtig en je hebt weinig rechte stukken waar je kan rusten. Dat maakt het fysieke aspect nog lastiger."

Sainz hield een goed gevoel over aan de race in Italië. De Spanjaard denkt dat hij en zijn team nu een aantal races kunnen oogsten met circuits die meer op het lijf van de Renault geschreven zijn. "Met de Italiaanse Grand Prix was ik blij. Daar willen we verder op bouwen op een serie circuits die ons pakket goed zouden moeten liggen. Ik voel me positief en dat wil ik omzetten in een goed weekend in Singapore."

Renault, Haas, RPFI, Sauber, McLaren, Williams en STR strijden normaal gesproken om de plaatsen 7 t/m 10, waarbij ik Gasly, Alonso, Hulkenberg, Ocon en Magnussen zou tippen voor die plekken. Singapore is fysiek en mentaal zwaar met een grote kans op incidenten en dat maakt het onmogelijk om de uitkomst te voorspellen. Ga er vanuit dat VER, HAM en VET om het podium strijden en ik hoop dat BOT met zijn kansloze inhaalactie de muur in knalt.
