Cristiano Da Matta viert vandaag zijn 45e verjaardag

Voormalig Toyota-coureur Cristiano da Matta is jarig. De Braziliaan, geboren te Belo Horizonte, is tevens ook de Fedex C ART-kampioen van 2002.

Da Matta, wiens vader veertienvoudig Braziliaans toerwagenkampioen was, begon op 16-jarige leeftijd met karting. Na titels in de Braziliaanse Formule Ford en Formule 3 Sudamericana kwam hij in 1995 in Europa terecht. In een competitief veld werd hij achtste in het Britse Formule 3-kampioenschap. Het daaropvolgende jaar scoorde hij 7 punten voor Pacific Racing in het Formule 3000-kampioenschap.

Via Europa kwam de weg naar de Formule 1 voor de Braziliaan tot stilstand, maar in de Verenigde Staten behaalde Da Matta veel successen. Da Matta won in 1998 voor Tasman het Indy Lights kampioenschap om in 1999 zijn debuut te maken in de toen nog hoog aangeschreven CART Series. Zijn eerste overwinning kwam in 2000 op de oval van Chicago. Vanaf 2001 vertrokken er diverse teams richting de IRL en werd het niveau van het kampioenschap minder. Desondanks won Da Matta in 2002 het CART-kampioenschap. Hij bleef hier grote namen als Dario Franchitti en Michael Andretti ruimschoots voor.

Vanaf 2003 kwam dan toch de droom voor Da Matta uit. Toyota contracteerde hem als race-coureur door hem te belonen omdat hij de eerste coureur was die met een Toyota motor het CART kampioenschap kon winnen. Gedurende twee jaar reed de Braziliaan dertien punten bij elkaar om tijdens het Duitse Grand Prix weekend van 2004 openlijk zijn werkgever te bekritiseren. Toyota zette Da Matta op non-actief wegens gebrek aan vertrouwen en gebrek aan resultaat. Da Matta keerde terug naar de Verenigde Staten won in 2005 nog een race op Portland, maar kwam nooit meer op het niveau dat hij in 2002 haalde.

Tegenwoordig is Da Matta verantwoordelijk voor de geldstroming en de logistiek binnen familiebedrijf Da Matta Design, een kledingfabrikant uit zijn geboorteland.

Misschien wel even goed te melden dat hij nooit terug gekeerd is op zijn oude niveau nadat hij op Road America een hert heeft moeten wegkoppen uit zijn cockpit. De beste man was er bijna niet meer geweest door dat ongeval.

Die ken ik nog wel. Zo slecht vond ik hem eigenlijk niet... had hem graag langer in de F1 gezien.

Misschien wel even goed te melden dat hij nooit terug gekeerd is op zijn oude niveau nadat hij op Road America een hert heeft moeten wegkoppen uit zijn cockpit. De beste man was er bijna niet meer geweest door dat ongeval.

  Dat was inderdaad een heftig ongeluk. En ook waarschijnlijk aangevoerd als nog een reden om een halo of aero screen door te voeren. Nu kan ik me alleen geen andere incidenten met aangereden herten voor de geest halen maar ongeveer elk freak incident is als reden aangevoerd om de halo er op te krijgen.
  OT: Het was al een hele overwinning voor Da Matta om weer normaal te kunnen lopen en daarna zelfs nog te racen in sportscars series. En Da Matta kennen we ook nog dat ie ineens aan de leiding reed op Silverstone nadat die gek van een priester de baan op kwam rennen.

  Ja ik wel WaltherWhite! Volgens mij was het Stefan Johansson in een McLaren in Oostenrijk eind jaren 80 ergens. Geen opnames, wel foto's ooit van gezien van een vliegend hert, en dan heb ik het niet over de tor!

Prima dat hier aandacht besteed wordt aan de verjaardagen van oud coureurs,
maar waarom niet (meer) aan de verjaardagen van hedendaagse (Today) coureurs?
Recent waren Ericsson, Sainz en Ocon nog jarig.
