Ericsson: "Laatste vijf, zes races heb ik beter gepresteerd"

De overstap van Charles Leclerc naar Ferrari wil Marcus Ericsson gebruiken om contractverlenging bij Sauber af te dwingen. Dat zegt de Zweed in gesprek met Autosport.

Charles Leclerc heeft met zijn goede prestaties in 2018 een stoeltje bij Ferrari verdiend voor de komende jaren. Ericsson strijdt intussen voor wat hij waard is om in de Formule 1 te blijven. De beste kansen van de Zweed liggen bij Sauber, maar die hebben slechts een zitje vrij na de komst van Kimi Raikkonen. Ook coureurs als Antonio Giovinazzi zijn in beeld voor een plekje bij Sauber, maar Ericsson is van mening dat hij een plekje verdient in 2019.

"Ze hebben me geen details of een tijdsperiode gegeven, maar ik weet dat ik nu moet presteren. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik de laatste vijf, zes races beter gepresteerd heb. Ik heb meer punten gescoord dan Charles in de vijf races voor Singapore. Hij heeft een contract voor een aantal jaar bij Ferrari getekend, dus dat zegt wel iets. Dat moet ik blijven volhouden. Het is niet aan mij om te bepalen of dat genoeg is voor een contract, maar ik moet alles blijven geven."

Volgens Ericsson is de concurrentie voor de resterende plaatsjes in de Formule 1 groter dan ooit. "Er is meer competitie voor de zitjes dan in de afgelopen jaren. Dat Kimi bij Sauber tekent, illustreert dat. Nu is er nog een zitje over en moet ik echt indruk maken op het team om te bewijzen dat ik er thuis hoor. De druk is dus hoog, maar daar hou ik van. Ik rij meestal mijn beste races als ik de grootste druk op mijn schouders heb liggen, dus het maakt mij niet echt veel uit."

Ze zijn bij Sauber bang dat je Kimi het snot voor de ogen gaat rijden dus zal je wel weg moeten.:-)

Hij lijkt er inderdaad iets beter bij te zitten de laatste races maar de laatste jaren waren inderdaad aardig kansloos. '16 en '17 totaal geen punt gescoord en werd door felipe Nasr ook totaal zoek gereden. Zijn huidige vorm zegt meer over de vorm van de Sauber dan over zijn eigen vorm denk ik !

  In 2016 was Nasr alleen beter in zijn thuisland. De rest van het jaar zat er weinig verschil tussen Ericsson en Nasr. Ericsson kwalificeerde beter dan Nasr (13-8) In de races was het 9-10 in her voordeel van Nasr.
  
  Totaal zoek gereden valt in ieder geval wel mee. Naar mijn mening horen beide coureurs niet thuis in de F1.
