Monger pakt pole position bij terugkeer op Donington Park

Billy Monger keert dit weekend terug op het circuit waar het vorig jaar allemaal verkeerd ging. De jonge Brit luisterde die terugkomst op Donington Park wel op met een pole position.

In april 2017 ging het helemaal verkeerd voor Monger op datzelfde circuit. In het Britse Formule 4-kampioenschap reed hij op volle snelheid achterop een stilstaande auto. Monger verloor bij dat ongeluk beide onderbenen. Anno 2018 rijdt hij voor Carlin in het Brits Formule 3 en dat doet hij niet onaardig. Hij pakte al podiumplaatsen op Oulton Park en Spa-Francorchamps. Nu volgde dus een pole position op Donington. In de race die volgde werd Monger vierde.

"Pole pakken is een geweldige start van het weekend. Zeker bij mijn terugkeer op dit circuit, dat toch een speciale betekenis voor mij heeft", vertelde Monger na de kwalificatie. "Het is iets waarvan ik wist dat het haalbaar was, zeker na de afgelopen races. Telkens zat ik in de buurt, maar maakte ik fouten. Vandaag ging het om het doen van ons werk en dat hebben we gedaan."

      Alex Zanardi kwam na zijn zware crash in 2001 wonderbaarlijk terug dankzij zijn geweldige mentaliteit en doorzettingsvermogen. Iedereen was en is vol lof over hem. In dit overkwam hem als volwassen man die waarschijnlijk al had geleerd met bepaalde tegenslagen om te gaan. Nu zie je een tiener die qua dat nog weinig heeft mee gemaakt in zijn jonge leventje, en toch zijn hele toekomst in rook zag opgaan zo terug knokken tot dit niveau? Daar kun je alleen maar enorm respect voor hebben. Ik zie het helaas niet gebeuren dat deze jongen ooit F1 gaat rijden. Maar hij zal wel degelijk het niveu van Zanardi kunnen gaan halen en competitief mee blijven doen in andere classes.

      Super hè! Wat een vechters zijn die mensen. Al winnen ze nooit meer wat heb ik er nog steeds meer bewondering dan een F1 kampioen. Zulke mensen zijn een inspiratie als het eens wat tegenzit. Dat gaat ff wat verder.
