'Grand Prix in Miami staat op losse schroeven'

Een Formule 1-race door de straten van Miami lijkt voorlopig van de baan te zijn. Leden van het stadsbestuur zouden unaniem voor een voorstel gestemd hebben dat een besluit over de Grand Prix voor onbepaalde tijd uitstelt.

Liberty Media en de Formule 1 hadden hun pijlen voor een Grand Prix in Miami in eerste instantie gericht op 2019. Dat bleek niet haalbaar, waarna ingezet werd op een eerste editie in 2020. Nu hangt er boven die plannen dus een grote donkere wolk. Volgens het Duitse persbureau DPA heeft het stadsbestuur een besluit over de Grand Prix unaniem voor onbepaalde tijd  de onderhandelingen over een race uitgesteld. Toch betekent dat niet dat een race definitief van de baan is.

In oktober zullen er wel Formule 1-auto's door de straten van Miami scheuren. De stad in Florida is dan het decor voor het laatse F1 Fan Festival van 2018. Onder andere Red Bull Racing en Renault zullen een dan een demonstratie geven.

    Ik ben bang dat als de demo in oktober tegenvalt, dat hij er helemaal nooit zal komen.

      Ik ga morgen naar de BSBK op Assen om Bradley Ray voor het eerst live aan het werk te zien. Dat jonge gassie jaagt zijn dikke Suzuki over de circuits eg nie normaal meer. Hou dat broekie in de gaten mensen, het gaat niet lang duren voordat we hem in de Moto GP kunnen bewonderen. No doubt!

    Ik begreep ook dat een overgrote meerderheid van de teams geen uitbreiding van de kalender (20-21 races is het maximum) is meer willen. Ben benieuwd hoe Liberty dit gaat oplossen. Als Vietnam nog wordt toegevoegd zit de kalender vol.

      En voor de promotie van Miami is het ook niet nodig. Toeristen en overwinteraars genoeg.

      Nee dat is niet probleem, Miami had met Liberty een deal om via een aparte "share costs/revenues" constructie de GP te kunnen bekostigen. Ongetwijfeld tegen het zere been van de diverse circuit-eigenaren (Austin was not amused bijv.). Het parcours in Miami zou op diverse locaties van private grondeigenaren lopen die uiteraard protest hadden aangetekend. 1 grondeigenaar zit zelfs in het bestuur vd lokale overheid. Het eea is gewoon niet goed overlegd en voorbereid.
