Massimiliano 'Max' Papis viert vandaag zijn 49e verjaardag

Max Papis is jarig. De in Como geboren Italiaan blaast vandaag 49 kaarsjes uit. Papis is getrouwd met Tatiana Fittipaldi, de dochter van Emersson. De Italiaan kreeg in 1996, tijdens de 24 uur van Daytona, de bijnaam "Mad Max"

Papis is, zoals men kan zeggen, een echte Globetrotter. De charmante en uiterst sympathieke Italiaan heeft zo'n beetje in elke raceklasse ter wereld achter het stuur gezeten. Papis behaalde in 1994 een zesde plaats in het European Formula 3000 kampioenschap, met een overwinning in Barcelona. Ondanks het idee dat Papis een goede solide coureur was en eigenlijk niet de echte rauwe snelheid had om de Formule 1 te halen, werd hij in 1994 als testrijder bij Lotus aangesteld.

In 1995 mocht Max zijn debuut maken in de Footwork, als vervanger van Gianni Morbidelli. Een goed huwelijk werd het helaas niet. Optisch gezien presteerde Papis minder dan 'paydriver en kamikaze piloot' Taki Inoue, maar de werkelijkheid lag anders. Footwork zat ernstig verlegen om geld en door de sponsorship-deal die Inoue had, bleek de Japanner achteraf gezien het recht te hebben op de unieke en nieuwe onderdelen. Papis moest het doen met motoren en versnellingsbakken waar de levensduur allang van verstreken was. Toch kreeg hij tijdens zijn thuisrace in 1995 op Monza de kans een puntje te pakken. Helaas voor Max, passeerde Jean Christophe Boullion hem in de laatste ronde en werd Papis zevende. Hij zou tijdens de Europese Grand Prix in 1995 op de Nürburgring zijn laatste race rijden. Deze race zou hij als twaalfde finishen.

Na zijn avontuur in de Formule 1, besloot Papis naar de Verenigde Staten te gaan. Papis ontwikkelde zich in de C ART-Series tot een zeer populair coureur. De warmte, liefde en het respect wat hij voor zijn collega's had, viel bij iedereen in de smaak. Papis werd gezien als de knuffelbeer van het gezelschap. Een man die niet alleen geweldig kon sturen, maar ook een man waar menig coureur hun eigen problemen bij kwijt kon. Papis kende daardoor de ins en outs van veel coureurs. Coureurs die tot op de dag van vandaag nog steeds vol lof over hem spreken. Papis kende twee uitstekende jaren in CART en won in totaal drie wedstrijden voor Rahal Letterman Racing.

Na zijn IndyCar-loopbaan reed hij IMSA in de Verenigde Staten, was hij NASCAR-coureur en reed hij de NASCAR Wheelen Series. De Italiaan, die zeer goed bevriend is met Alex Zanardi en Dario Franchitti, haalde meerdere podiums tijdens de 24-uur van Le Mans, in de GTLM-Pro klasse voor Corvette. Hedendaags is hij samen met Arie Luyendyk een van de race stewards tijdens IndyCar-weekenden. Wij feliciteren deze goedlachse en uiterst vriendelijke Italiaan met zijn verjaardag.   Was trouwens de allereerste F1 coureur die ik tijdens mijn bezoek aan Spa in 1995 in de grindbak heb zien staan in de Pouhon. Ik vond het geweldig.
  
  Dag erna ging Couthard stuk op bijna dezelfde plek, maar dan vlak voor de bocht. Mooi weekend! Hulde race en wat een startopstelling met die 2 Ferrari's op pole die natuurlijk weer stuk gingen maar veruit het beste geluid hadden.

Ik vond die Arrows uit 1995 altijd zeer mooi en dan niet alleen de livery maar gewoon de body.
