Hakkinen laat McLaren Mercedes V10 brullen ter ere van 30e Grand Prix van Japan

Mika Hakkinen reed ter gelegenheid van de dertigste Grand Prix van Japan op Suzuka een demonstratie in zijn McLaren MP4-13. De MP4-13 is de wereldkampioenschapsauto van 1998, ontwikkeld door Adrian Newey en Neil Oatley.

"Het is een geweldig circuit met ongelooflijk mooie herinneringen," vertelde de Hakkinen over de demonstratie. "Ik heb hier met Michael gestreden om het wereldkampioenschap, het voelt als gisteren! Maar ja, aangezien ik een sterk geheugen heb is dat vrij logisch," grapte de Fin.

Hakkinen, die 17 jaar geleden zijn laatste Formule 1-race reed, merkte dat het fysiek wat moeizamer ging dan voorheen. "De G-krachten zijn zo hoog, je kunt het gewoon niet vergelijken met een straat auto. Je kunt wel zien dat de McLaren ingenieurs geweldig werk hebben geleverd door deze topauto te bouwen. Ik had niet gedacht dat ik op 50-jarige leeftijd nog een keer een Formule 1-auto te besturen, maar het is ontzettend fijn om hier te zijn."

Ook onder andere Takuma Sato, Aguri Suzuki en Felipe Massa zullen op Suzuka enkele ronden rijden in diverse auto's om de verjaardag extra glans te geven.
