Marcus Ericsson crasht in Q1 door langzaam rijdende Bottas

De laatste startplaats voor de Grand Prix van Japan was niet waar hij op gehoopt had, maar de manier waarop dat tot stand kwam zal nog meer pijn doen bij Marcus Ericsson. De Sauber-coureur crashte in Q1.

De crash was volgens Ericsson het gevolg van het feit dat hij de langzaam rijdende Valtteri Bottas moest passeren. "Ik verloor de voorkant gewoon. Ik wist dat er aan de binnenkant een auto zat en ik dacht dat hij genoeg ruimte bood. Ik keek later terug naar de video en ik denk dat het genoeg is om de auto te verstoren. Op de data kan je zien dat ik die ronde meer onderstuur had dan in de vorige ronde. Het is geen excuus, want ik ging te snel voor de hoeveelheid beschikbare grip. Het was wel jammer."

Volgens Ericsson zijn de Formule 1-auto's anno 2018 erg gevoelig voor wind. De veranderende luchtstromen door de auto van Bottas waren dan ook een deel van de oorzaak van de crash. "De auto's zijn erg gevoelig voor de wind. Als de wind een klein beetje verandert, kan je veel grip verliezen. Ik misrekende hoeveel ik zou verliezen, waardoor ik iets te wijd ging. Dat gebeurde op een verkeerde plek, want het is voorbij als je met een wiel buiten het circuit gaat."
