Tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 Mika Häkkinen zou graag terugkeren in de racerij onder het motto: "Kick some butt".

De Fin heeft naar eigen zeggen veel gedacht aan het vooruitzicht om opnieuw te racen. Häkkinen verliet de Formule 1 na het seizoen 2001 om een sabbatical te nemen. Uiteindelijk werd het pensioen, maar sinds de Goodwood Revival denkt de Fin er serieus over na om deel uit te gaan maken van historische races. Na het rijden van de MP4/13 op Suzuka stelde Häkkinen dat elke terugkeer serieus genomen mag worden.

"Ik denk dat het heel goed mogelijk kan zijn, vrij eenvoudig omdat ik de fysiek heb om te rijden, ik heb dat namelijk zoveel jaren gedaan. Ik ben ook ambassadeur voor Hintsa Performance (een bedrijf dat mensen van het leven laat leren genieten en mensen beter laat presteren). Deze mensen zullen me helpen omdat ze voor veel coureurs in het huidige veld zorgen. Al die aspecten die ik hier eerder aangaf zitten bij mij op de juiste plek."

Häkkinen werd racewinnaar in de DTM nadat zijn Formule 1-carrière eindigde en besloot in 2007 te stoppen met de racerij. "Ik heb de laatste jaren echt vaak nagedacht over het autoracen. In 2011 reed ik nog in een Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 tijdens een wedstrijd om de Internationale Le Mans Cup in China. Maar tegenwoordig kost het ambassadeurschap voor Johnny Walker en Mercedes Benz gewoon ontzettend veel tijd. Dat zijn verplichtingen, en met vijf kinderen thuis zal dat moeilijk te combineren zijn. Als ik iets toevoeg in mijn leven, gaat het ten koste van mijn gezin. Ik ben van mening dat ik het zou kunnen doen, alleen moet de hele situatie in balans zijn en in balans blijven." besloot de Fin.

  Ik heb in Silverstone de Historic race goed gevolgd, maar dat is echt heel mooi om te zien en te horen. Voor de F1 race had ik geen oordopjes nodig, maar bij de Historische races absoluut wel. Wat een sound! Je 'ziet' de rijdes ook veel beter. Het geluid, de auto's, de geur... heerlijk schouwspel :)

Even offtopic. Gisteren bij Motorworld Keulen geweest, waar de privécollectie van Michael Schumacher's F1 auto's staan. Dikke aanrader en nog gratis ook. Nog een mooi boek op de kop getikt over de rekordmeister.
