Frijns en Abbring geselecteerd voor opleidingsprogramma FIA

Robin Frijns en Kevin Abbring hebben de laatste schifting voor de eerste editie van de Young Driver Excellence Academy overleefd. De twee Nederlanders behoren tot de twaalf rijders die geselecteerd zijn door de FIA Institute voor het opleidingsprogramma.

De achttien finalisten namen deel aan een shoot-out met BMW M3's op de Wachau Ring in Oostenrijk. De Belg Stoffel Vandoorne won de race. In de finale rekende hij af met Philipp Eng, maar ook Abbring en Frijns behoorden dus tot de besten.

Een van de programmaleiders is oud Formule 1-coureur Alexander Wurz. Het is een exceptioneel evenement geweest, met uitmuntend racewerk. Alle achttien kanshebbers waren het waard om hier te zijn en we willen de zes afvallers zeker volgend jaar terug zien.

Zijn collega Robert Reid voegde toe: Het niveau was over de hele linie vrij hoog en het zat dichter bij elkaar dan we gedacht hadden. Uiteindelijk hebben we de knoop doorgehakt om met twaalf jongens verder te gaan. Het was een moeilijke beslissing, maar nu begint de reis pas echt.

Later deze maand vindt de eerste trainingssessie in Edinburgh plaats.
