Alonso 'niet trots' op ronde die hem startplek 12 opleverde

Zeker niet voor het eerst in 2018 was Fernando Alonso in de kwalificatie veel beter dan teamgenoot Stoffel Vandoorne. Daar waar Vandoorne al in Q1 strandde, reed Alonso de twaalfde tijd in de kwalificatie.

Toch is de Spanjaard na afloop van de kwalificatie niet trots op het rondje dat hem de twaalfde startpositie opleverde. Dat is zijn beste startpositie sinds de Grand Prix van Singapore. De drie daaropvolgende races kwam Alonso niet voorbij Q1. "De ronde was niet perfect. We hadden onderstuur in de snelle bochten op de laatste set banden. Ik was totaal niet blij met en trots op deze ronde. Realistisch gezien is P12 beter dan we verwachtten," vertelde Alonso na de kwalificatie.

Alonso denkt dat hij en McLaren door de kwalificatie in een goede positie zitten om weer eens punten te scoren. "De snelheid tijdens de lange run stemt ons redelijk optimistisch. Vanaf een goede startpositie zou het een goede race moeten worden. Misschien zitten we dichter bij de punten dan tijdens de laatste races. De hypersofts moeten goed gemanaged worden, dus we moeten kijken wat we met onze eigen keuze kunnen doen. Hopelijk zien we de finishvlag en pakken we wat punten."
