Sauber zoekt extra reserve als back-up voor Ericsson

Sauber is nog bezig aan een zoektocht naar tweede reservecoureur. Het team heeft in Marcus Ericsson al een reservecoureur voor 2019, maar door zijn IndyCar-programma is hij niet elk weekend beschikbaar.

Antonio Giovinazzi is op dit moment nog de reservecoureur van Sauber, maar in 2019 schuift hij door naar een van de racezitjes. De Italiaan blijft tevens de reservecoureur van Ferrari. Mochten Giovinazzi en Raikkonen een keer niet in staat zijn om te racen voor Sauber, dan is Ericsson nu de aangewezen persoon om de lege plek op te vullen. De Zweed rijdt in 2019 ook een heel seizoen IndyCar voor Schmidt Peterson Motorsports en het schema van de klasse botst liefst acht keer met die van de Formule 1.

Pascal Wehrlein werd genoemd als kandidaat voor de functie, maar teambaas Fred Vasseur ziet dat niet zitten. "Hier hebben we het nooit over gehad. De strategie is om een jonge coureur naast Marcus neer te zetten en daarin te investeren en hem voor te bereiden op de toekomst. Het zal vooral om deze filosofie gaan. Het is echter best lastig om nu iemand te vinden met 40 licentiepunten", vertelde de Fransman aan Motorsport.com.
