Pascal Wehrlein in 2019 ontwikkelingsrijder voor Ferrari

Pascal Wehrlein heeft een opvallende overstap gemaakt. De voormalig Mercedes-protegé gaat dit seizoen namelijk als ontwikkelingsrijder werken voor concurrent Ferrari. Mercedes en Wehrlein, die in 2016 en 2017 zijn laatste twee jaar in de Formule 1 spendeerde bij de teams van Manor en Sauber, gingen aan het eind van vorig jaar uit elkaar.

De Duitser stond in 2018 aan de zijlijn, omdat Sauber, het team waar hij in 2017 voor reed, er de voorkeur aan gaf om het afgelopen jaar te gaan rijden met Marcus Ericsson en Charles Leclerc en eind vorig jaar werden dus ook zijn banden met Mercedes verbroken.

Ondertussen was Ferrari op zoek naar een nieuwe ontwikkelingsrijder, omdat het Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) en Antonio Giovinazzi (Sauber) allebei kwijtraakte. Beide coureurs gaan aankomend seizoen full-time racen. Daardoor is Ferrari uitgekomen bij Wehrlein, die een vrij man was. Aangenomen wordt dat Wehrlein Ferrari op maandag heeft bezocht in Maranello en daarnaast zou Ferrari nog een tweede ontwikkelingsrijder willen aanstellen. 

Wehrlein zal zijn rol bij Ferrari combineren met zijn Formule E-stoeltje bij Mahindra. Hij zal zijn debuut maken bij de volgende Grand Prix in Marrakesh.

    Slim, is zijn enige kans op terugkeer in de F1.

      Ja beschuit, slim idd.

      Mercedes heeft hem meerdere keren laten stikken. Zelfs publiekelijk zei Toto dat ze hem niet zouden laten vallen. Dit hebben ze wel gedaan.

      En nu gaat hij met de kennis die hij heeft naar de concurrent.

      Ze hadden beter Hartley kunnen pakken, die kan nog wat info verstrekken mbt Ho da en is goed voor de ontwikkeling van een auto. Wehtlein is geen goede keuze of het moet de enige keuze moeten zijn geweest.

    Tje Wehrlein hadden ze niet meer nodig nu ze ook Russell en Ocon hebben. Het enige enigzins verrassende zou kunnen zijn dat ze (Merc) een talentvolle Duitse coureur hebben laten vertrekken en de andere twee coureurs zijn niet Duits.
