Pietro Fittipaldi wil zijn rol als testrijder bij Haas combineren met een andere race-klasse

Pietro Fittipaldi, de kleinzoon van Emerson Fittipaldi, wil in 2019 actief zijn in een raceklasse. Het zal zoeken worden naar een klasse die niet veel overlappingen heeft met de Formule 1-weekenden. Fittipaldi kreeg van Gunther Steiner goedkeuring om gedurende een gedeelte van het jaar actief te zijn in een andere klasse. "Ik wil je de kans geven om elders te racen zodat je carrière niet in verval raakt," was de uitleg van Steiner aan Fittipaldi.

Pietro bevestigde dat Haas zijn prioriteit is, maar tijdens het Grand Prix-seizoen is zijn aanwezigheid op de simulator een vereiste. "De rol in de Formule 1 met Haas is mijn prioriteit, dit zal vele uren in beslag gaan nemen. Ik wil een goede job doen voor het team. Ik wil ook dat ik in een raceklasse actief blijf, ergens waar ik met een goed team voor overwinningen kan gaan. Dit zal misschien een beetje moeilijk worden aangezien ik maar een paar dagen kan missen."

Fittipaldi heeft zicht op een superlicentie. De Braziliaan heeft op dit moment 20 van de vereiste 40 punten. Het is voor Fittipaldi een must om te racen, aangezien zijn punten niet eeuwig houdbaar zijn. Zijn titel in het Formula V8-kampioenschap van 2017 leverde hem 20 punten op. Deze zullen eind 2020 vervallen en met één jaar aan de zijlijn betekend het dat Fittipaldi in 2019 en 2020 punten moet behalen om zijn superlicentie te halen. Het seizoen 2018 werd voor de Braziliaan verstoord door een ernstig ongeluk op Spa-Francorchamps. Hij reed een aantal races in de IndyCars en testte afgelopen jaar op het Yas Marina-circuit tijdens de Formule 1-test van Pirelli.

Achter het stuur van de Jaguar Gen-2 Formula E-auto legde de Braziliaan tijdens een test 79 ronden af. "De auto is redelijk onstabiel en het is moeilijk om gedurende een langere tijd te pushen. In vergelijking met de Gen-1 auto moet je veel voorzichtiger zijn met het gaspedaal. Ik heb interesse in het Formule E-kampioenschap maar ik denk dat iedere coureur van mijn leeftijd die interesse wel heeft," besloot de Braziliaan.
