Norris: "Mislopen Formule 2-titel heeft betere coureur van mij gemaakt"

Lando Norris liep in 2018 de titel in de Formule 2 mis. George Russell ging ermee aan de haal, maar Norris denkt dat hij zelf een betere coureur geworden is door de nederlaag van het afgelopen jaar.

Komend seizoen debuteert Norris in de Formule 1 bij McLaren. Daar vervangt de nieuwkomer Stoffel Vandoorne, die zijn Formule 1-carrière al na twee seizoenen (voorlopig) ziet eindigen. Norris werd in 2018 tweede in het Formule 2-kampioenschap en dwong daarmee promotie af, nadat hij in 2017 al de titel in het Europees Formule 3 won. De Brit neemt alle positieve punten uit het afgelopen jaar mee, ondanks dat hij het kampioenschap niet winnend afsloot.

"Op een bepaalde manier was vorig jaar een goed jaar om te leren dat ik niet altijd kan winnen, want ik won het kampioenschap niet. Ik wil niet arrogant klinken, maar ik heb altijd bij goede teams gereden waar ik goede mensen om me heen heb gehad. Dat heeft me geholpen een betere coureur te zijn en races en kampioenschappen te winnen. Ik heb andere dingen kunnen ervaren dan andere coureurs", vertelde Norris tijdens de Autosport International Show.

"Tegelijkertijd is de Formule 1 erg anders en er zijn elk jaar veranderingen. Je staat niet altijd op de plaats waar je wil staan. Dat is iets wat ik moet leren en vorig jaar ben ik daarmee begonnen: hoe je je moet ontwikkelen en progressie moet boeken en als team beter kan worden."

"In de Formule 2 en Formule 3 heeft iedereen dezelfde auto. Je kan kleine dingen veranderen, maar nog kan je los staan van de andere teams. In de Formule 1 is alles anders. Je hebt andere mensen, andere auto's, andere motoren enzovoorts. Er moeten veel dingen samenkomen om als geheel beter te worden. Daarin ga ik niet perfect zijn, maar in de loop der tijd word ik beter. Ook word ik dan een betere coureur wat betreft het helpen van mezelf en het team en hopelijk win ik op een dag het kampioenschap."

  Dat is wel zo, maar omgaan met de spanning van het kunnen winnen en dat ook doen is net zo belangrijk. Er zijn er zoveel die verkrampen als de winst voor het grijpen ligt.

Goede rijders evalueren ook indien ze winnen. Kijk maar naar Hamilton. Die reed redelijk wat goede races maar hij meldde constant indien er iets niet goed was. Ook in de haast perfecte races gaf hij feedback en luisterde hij naar feedback. Hij heeft Bottas niet zomaar overklast dit seizoen.

Norris begint zich al aardig te bekwamen in McLaren-speak (soort van Ron-Speak).
Waar het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull misschien wel eens een beetje aandacht aan mediatraining mag geven, daar schiet het McLaren programma al jaren gruwelijk door. Al dat politiek correcte gewauwel...
