'Raikkonen ondernam als eerste actie richting hereniging met Sauber'

Sauber sluit Kimi Raikkonen in 2019 na 17 jaar weer in de armen. Toch was het niet het Zwitserse team, maar de Fin zelf die contact legde voor een eventuele terugkeer op het oude nest.

Velen verwachtten dat Raikkonen na 2018 de helm aan de wilgen zou hangen, maar niets was minder waar. De wereldkampioen van 2007 verraste door een contract te tekenen bij Sauber, dat hem maar liefst twee jaar langer in de Formule 1 houdt. Volgens manager Steve Robertson was het Raikkonen zelf die contact zocht met Sauber over de mogelijkheid om terug te keren. "Toen Kimi hoorde dat hij volgend jaar geen contract zou hebben bij Ferrari, ondernam hij zelf actie. Hij begon de gesprekken over een mogelijk zitje bij Sauber", vertelde hij aan Formula1.com.

Robertson herinnert zich dat Raikkonen vervolgens contact zocht met teambaas Fred Vasseur en Beat Zehnder. "Kimi wilde graag door. Hij had ontmoetingen met de eigenaren van Sauber, daarna een ontmoeting met Fred en Beat. Zij konden zien dat Kimi zin had om door te gaan. Fred maakte later ook duidelijk dat Kimi meteen erg gefocust was op de plannen voor 2019."

"Kimi wilde graag kijken of het team hetzelfde enthousiasme had en toen hij dat voelde, wilde hij graag een deal sluiten. Hij was een beetje negatief in Monza toen hij hoorde wat er gebeurde, maar hij sloeg erg snel terug. Hij wilde blijven rijden, omdat hij het gevoel heeft dat hij nog wat in te brengen heeft."

Het blijven van Kimi is dit jaar de grootste zegen voor de F1. Toch een beetje tegenwicht ten opzichte van de instromende kleuterklas. En Kimi is inderdaad een icoon!

Elke keer er iemand vertrekt van de oude garde is dat zonde ongeacht welkerijder dit ook maar is.
Nu was het Alonso en dan is het inderdaad mooi dat zo'n gave kerel als Kimi nog ff blijft.
Stel je voor dat er in hetzelfde jaar 2 of meer de helm ophangen ....dat zou toch ff wennen zijn als f1 fan.

Hij was ook gewoon niet op zijn gemak de laatste jaren. vooral door alle spelletjes die er tegenwoordig in de top worden gespeeld. hij wilt gewoon racen en daarna een koud biertje drinken.

  De meeste van ons weten dat wel en ik weet zeker Royalere ook , maar buiten een laptop of pc om is het soms best wel lastig om hier foutloos een bericht achter te laten vanaf een tablet of telefoon met dat autocorrectie die te pas en onpas letters en tekens toevoegd ..
  Ik betrap mezelf er ook geregeld op .
