Bottas eindigt als vijfde in Arctic Lapland Rally en wint een etappe

Valtteri Bottas heeft zijn eerste rallydeelname afgesloten op de vijfde positie. De Mercedes-coureur won in zijn Ford Fiesta WRC ook een etappe tijdens de Arctic Lapland Rally, die werd verreden in het thuisland van Bottas.

Tijdens de Arctic Lapland Rally nam Bottas het op tegen rijders die deelnemen aan het Finse rallykampioenschap en dat deed hij niet onverdienstelijk. De Fin, die in 2018 een lastig seizoen kende in de Formule 1, won een van de etappes en eindigde in het eindklassement als vijfde. Daarbij moet wel gezegd worden dat Bottas de beschikking had over een Ford Fiesta uit het wereldkampioenschap rally's, terwijl de overige deelnemers in actie kwamen met minder snelle R5-bolides.

Met de deelname aan de rally lijkt Bottas zijn hoofd leeg gemaakt te willen hebben voor de start van het seizoen 2019. Dit jaar moet de drievoudig Grand Prix-winnaar bewijzen dat hij Lewis Hamilton bij kan houden, want anders moet hij hoogstwaarschijnlijk vertrekken bij Mercedes. Zijn deelname aan de Arctic Lapland Rally beviel Bottas in ieder geval goed. Op Twitter vertelde hij aan zijn volgers dat hij genoten heeft van de lastige etappes van de rally.
