Pirelli wil in 2019 starten met testen van 18-inch banden

Pirelli hoopt nog gedurende dit jaar haar nieuwe 18-inch banden volledig ontwikkeld te hebben. De Italiaanse rubberfabrikant hoopt tijdens het lopende seizoen de banden voor het eerst te testen. De banden worden ingevoerd als onderdeel van het nieuwe reglement dat in 2021 haar intrede zal moeten doen. Dit reglement omvat ook de vernieuwde motorformule en aerodynamische veranderingen. Tot op heden is er nog geen officieel bericht naar buiten gekomen in welke vorm dit zal zijn. Meerdere teams hebben al openlijk geklaagd over het trage proces waarin de besluitvorming hierover plaatsvindt.

Vorig jaar kondigde Pirelli aan dat met tot en met 2023 als officiële bandenleverancier aan de Formule 1 verbonden blijft. Men nam in deze nieuwe deal de mogelijkheid op om voor 2021 18-inch banden te introduceren. In 2011 keerde Pirelli terug als bandenleverancier in de Formule 1. In de jaren '80 en '90 waren de Italianen al leverancier voor een aantal kleinere teams. Benetton won in 1991 met Pirelli de Grand Prix van Canada. Na 1991 trok de fabrikant zich terug en verlegde men de focus richting de GT's en sportscars.

Volgens Dieter Rencken van RaceFans begint Pirelli in het tweede gedeelte van 2019 met de tests. Het onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsteam in Milaan zal zodoende in een vroeg stadium al data kunnen ontvangen die gaan helpen bij de ontwikkeling van de definitieve band.

Dat trage proces is misschien maar goed ook.
We zagen het voordeel wat Mercedes had bij intrede van de 1.6 turbo.
18" is wel vet, grotere remmen meer grip, stijver etc.
