Vandaag de dag: De sterfdag van McLaren-topman Teddy Mayer

Vandaag is het exact tien jaar geleden dat Edward Everett Mayer, één van de grondleggers van het huidige McLaren-concern, overleed.

Mayer werd geboren in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Hij kwam in contact met de autosport door zijn broer Timmy en goede vriend Peter Revson. Nadat hij in 1962 zijn studie had afgerond, vervolgde hij zijn weg naar Europa. Hier kwam hij in contact met Bruce McLaren. Op dat moment zette Bruce McLaren zijn Formule 1-team op. Ondanks de dood van zijn broer in 1964, besloot Mayer door te gaan in de autosport. Hij nam na de dood van McLaren-baas Bruce McLaren het team volledig over.

Zijn eerste grote overwinning kwam in 1972 toen Emerson Fittipaldi de wereldtitel behaalde. In 1976 stond Mayer aan de zijde van James Hunt in zijn jacht op de titel. Onder de leiding van Mayer kwam McLaren vervolgens uit in de IndyCar-series en het CanAm-kampioenschap. Onder zijn leiding won McLaren drie maal de Indy 500. Twee maal als constructeur en één maal als bouwer van een chassis. Dit chassis werd gebruikt door het team van Roger Penske.

Marlboro werd mede dankzij de lobby van Mayer de hoofdsponsor van McLaren. Later voegde het team zich bij het Project 4-team van Ron Dennis. Mayer bleef als mede-directeur aan. In 1982 verkocht hij zijn aandelen en verliet hij het team wat hij met Bruce McLaren had opgezet. Hij vervolgde zijn loopbaan in de autosport en werd in 1986 teammanager van het Haas Lola-team. De resultaten waren niet geweldig en het team besloot zich terug te trekken. Daarna ging hij aan de slag bij Penske, dit hield hij tot 2007 vol. Mayer overleed op 30 januari 2009 aan de gevolgen van Parkinson.
