Kubica: "Huidige nieuwkomers beter voorbereid op Formule 1 dan ik was"

Robert Kubica keert in 2019 terug als fulltime coureur bij Williams en daar krijgt hij nieuwkomer George Russell als teamgenoot. De Pool denkt dat de huidige lichting rookies veel beter voorbereid richting de Formule 1 komen dan toen hij zelf debuteerde, inmiddels 13 jaar geleden.

Russell debuteerde in 2014 in de autosport en dat jaar werd hij meteen kampioen in het Britse Formule 4-kampioenschap. In de jaren daarna werkte hij zich rap op richting de Formule 1 door titels te behalen in de GP3 Series (2017) en Formule 2 (2018). In 2019 volgt dus het debuut van de Brit bij Williams, waar hij naast Kubica plaatsneemt. "George is een erg goede coureur, een van de meest getalenteerde van de nieuwe generatie. Hij won in de Formule 2 en de GP3, hij is getalenteerd en erg vastberaden", zei Kubica tijdens een evenement van sponsor PKN.

"Ik ken hem tot nu toe als een erg aardige jongen. Hij is erg volwassen voor zijn leeftijd en dat maakt volgens mij een groot verschil. Toen ik de Formule 1 bereikte, moesten de jonkies de sport nog leren kennen. Nu zijn ze veel beter voorbereid dan dat wij tien, vijftien jaar geleden waren. Ze werken nauw samen met Formule 1-teams door de opleidingsprogramma's en ze weten veel meer dan dat wij wisten."

De resultaten van Williams lieten de afgelopen seizoenen een dalende lijn zien. In 2015 werd het team nog derde bij de constructeurs, afgelopen seizoen stonden ze stijf onderaan in de stand. Kubica wil dat hij en Russell vooral bezig gaan met het verbeteren van de resultaten van Williams. De enkelvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar meent dat zijn jonge teamgenoot daar de capaciteiten voor heeft. "Ik moet zeggen dat hij indruk op mij maakte met zijn technische kennis en andere zaken."

  Of hij hemelt Russel nu op zodat, als hij hem zoek rijdt, zijn eigen prestaties alleen nog maar beter lijken.

Haha, je gaat het wel bijna denken ja. In die tijd werd er veel meer getest dus dat lijkt me sterk.

  Er werd idd meer op het circuit getest... nu kun je alles al voor 98 procent in de sim testen... de wagen en de coureur, natuurlijk moet je het op de circuit wel waarmaken maar je bent al een heel stuk verder voordat je je eerst meters op het circuit maakt. ;-)
