Montoya over Bottas: "Je ziet snel groot verschil als hij zich niet in auto thuisvoelt"

Het verschil tussen Mercedes-coureurs Lewis Hamilton en Valtteri Bottas was groot in 2019. Juan Pablo Montoya heeft wel een vermoeden wat daarvan de oorzaak kan zijn: Bottas zou zich niet op zijn gemak gevoeld hebben in de W09.

Bottas won in zijn tweede seizoen bij Mercedes geen enkele race, nadat hij in 2017 nog drie keer zegevierde. Teamgenoot Hamilton won echter elf keer en werd overtuigend wereldkampioen. Bottas moest tijdens de Grand Prix van Rusland zelfs aan de kant voor de inmiddels vijfvoudig wereldkampioen.

In gesprek met AS heeft Montoya wel een idee waarom Bottas niet goed uit de verf kwam in 2018. “Het is veel makkelijker om het verschil te maken als je je comfortabel voelt in de auto waarin je rijdt. Het kan zomaar zo zijn geweest dat Bottas zich niet thuis voelde in de nieuwe auto en Lewis overduidelijk wel. Dan zie je al heel snel een groot verschil terug.”

Vorig jaar ging de strijd om de wereldtitels vooral tussen Mercedes en Lewis Hamilton en Ferrari en Sebastian Vettel. Montoya denkt dat deze teams ook in 2019 weer van de partij zijn om mee te doen om de titels, terwijl hij zich ook afvraagt of Red Bull Racing zich met Max Verstappen en Pierre Gasly in dat gevecht kan mengen.

“Dat is één van de twee grote vragen waarop we een antwoord zullen krijgen. Lukt het Red Bull om met Honda succes te behalen en kan het team als dat het geval is ook constant genoeg ontwikkelen? De tweede vraag betreft Ferrari en Mercedes, namelijk welke van de twee de beste wagen op de grid zet.”

“Nu McLaren alles weer op een rijtje heeft, denk ik dat het een goed team is om bij te zitten", vervolgt Montoya over zijn voormalige team, dat het de afgelopen jaren erg zwaar had. "Het is duidelijk dat ze daad bij woord hebben gevoegd en ze verbeteringen doorvoeren. Maar ik voorspel wel dat Carlos Sainz het lastig gaat krijgen. Hij is een prima coureur, maar presteren met McLaren is momenteel nog wel lastig."

Ik kan Ocon gewoon niet meer uitstaan sinds dat misselijkmakende toneelstukje bij de weegschaal in Brazillie , eerst was ik nog fan van hem maar dat gedrag en uitdagen past in mijn ogen gewoon niet in de top van de autosport .. maar das mijn eigen bescheiden mening

Tja ,bottas reed op t einde niet al te best rond maar als ik eerlijk ben is dat vooral gekomen nadat hem zijn zege was ontnomen en dat ie Hamilton voor moest laten .

Ik denk dat er mentaal iets geknakt is bij hem , en heb m dit jaar ook veel contact met mede coureurs zien maken wat hij voorheen toch ook niet zo heel vaak had
Dit jaar zal toch wel t jaar van de waarheid worden voor hem , anders zien we die misselijke theatermakende Ocon in de Mercedes wat ik hem al helemaal niet gun .

  Paar punten
  1) Bij Bottas speelt denk ik vooral zelfvertrouwen, wellicht gevoed door minder thuis voelen in de auto
  2) als Red Bull zich kan mengen in de strijd voor WK dan is dat Max, maar in mijn ogen niet Gasly.
  3) had ik vandaag al aangegeven dat mijn waarzegger wederom bevestigd (en geverifieerd met glazen bol!) dat Max in 2019 WK wordt.

  Maximum overdrive: mentaal geknakt weet ik niet, maar het kan zeker mee spelen.
  Inderdaad, maakte veel contact (had hij het seizoen ervoor toen hij wel 3 gps won, ook wel frequent)
  Ik begrijp niet dat je zo naar Ocon kijkt ????

  @Maximum, als Bottas na Rusland door die ene beslissing geknakt was, is hij niet een echte topper. Juist veerkracht na een nederlaag typeert de echte kmpioenen.

  Denk eerder vooral de banden management volledig de plank mislaat.. de start is goed maar de banden die gaan ook eerder en als ze gaan dan wilt het al helemaal nie meer lukken...

Precies hetzelfde zeiden ze begin 2018. Toen voelde hij zich niet thuis omdat hij last-minute binnenkwam en de auto niet voor hem ontworpen was. maar dat zou in 2018 heeeelemaal anders worden.
