Giovinazzi prijst zich gelukkig met Raikkonen als teamgenoot bij Alfa Romeo

Na twee invalbeurten in 2017 mag Antonio Giovinazzi zich komend seizoen bewijzen bij Alfa Romeo. Daar krijgt hij Kimi Raikkonen als teamgenoot en hij prijst zichzelf daarmee gelukkig.

Giovinazzi maakte zijn Formule 1-debuut tijdens de Australische Grand Prix van 2017, toen hij voor de geblesseerde Pascal Wehrlein mocht invallen bij Sauber. Dat mocht hij ook in China. In beide races maakte de Italiaan geen sterke indruk. Na ruim een jaar als reserve van Ferrari krijgt Giovinazzi in 2019 een nieuwe kans in de Formule 1. Ook dit keer neemt hij plaats bij Sauber, dat sinds kort door het leven gaat als Alfa Romeo Racing.

Tegenover Autosport durft Giovinazzi nog geen verwachtingen uit te spreken, maar hij is wel blij dat hij zich kan meten aan Raikkonen, de meest ervaren coureur op de grid in 2019. "We hebben nog steeds geen data over het potentieel van de nieuwe auto, maar voor mij is het vooral belangrijk dat ik race na race groei laat zien. Ik heb geluk dat ik Kimi als teamgenoot heb, want dat is voor mij een geweldig richtpunt."

Zijn werk als simulatorcoureur en reserve van Ferrari zag Giovinazzi als een kans om een nieuwe mogelijkheid in de Formule 1 te verdienen. "Aanvankelijk is het een erg fijne ervaring, omdat je werkt met professionals en geweldige coureurs. In mijn geval waren dat Sebastian Vettel en Kimi. Na verloop van tijd kan het een routineklus worden, maar ik zag het altijd als een kans. Het was voor mij de manier om Ferrari te overtuigen dat ik een kans verdien."

Giovinazzi kan inmiddels toegeven dat zijn matige debuut in de Formule 1 een van de slechtste momenten van zijn carrière geweest is. "Ik wist erg goed dat kansen in de Formule 1 schaars zijn en voor het eerst in mijn leven had ik het gevoel dat ik een mogelijkheid verprutste. Ik was niet blij met mezelf, want ik had veel meer kunnen laten zien. Ik heb de mensen die mij bleven steunen twee jaar lang geprobeerd terug te betalen door keihard te werken. Op de reservebank werd ik beter en beter en ik ben blij dat ik dat nu uitbetaald zie worden."

Kimi lag prima bij Ferrari en kon het goed vinden met Vettel. Hij was alleen wat langzamer. t is niet dat ie nu ineens sneller gaat rijden hoor.

Heel erg benieuwd naar Kimi's prestaties. Als Sauber/Alfa een redelijke auto weet te bouwen (of kopen.....?) dan zie ik nog wel eens Kimi hele leuke dingen uit die auto halen.

  Nee, al lijkt t me schitterend maar ik denk dat dit too much wishfull thinking is. maar ik hoop dat ze net zo goed zullen zijn als force india afgelopen jaren..

  Kimi mist al jaren de pure snelheid, dus is een ideale teamgenoot voor Giovinazzi. Ik zie hem Kimi wel verslaan, in elk geval op zaterdag.

Kimi is verlost van het juk da Ferrari/Vettel heet...ik denk dat dit een heel leuk team gaat worden waar we als fans veel plezier aan gaan beleven

  Het juk? Als je daarmee de voorkeursbehandeling van 1 van de twee rijders bedoelt, dan vond ik dat het afgelopen seizoen wel meevallen.
  We hebben zelfs van een overwinning van Kimi in Austin mogen genieten.
  Bottas daarentegen werd regelmatig bruut vanachter genomen door Toto ;)

Denk het ook wel zou me niets verbazen als hij door Kimi aankomend jaar het meeste garen bij de jongeren gaat spinnen .
