McLaren stelt overstap op Petrobras mogelijk uit: "Werken nog aan ontwikkeling"

McLaren is sinds begin 2018 verbonden aan oliemaatschappij Petrobras. Het Braziliaanse merk is daardoor per 2019 de nieuwe leverancier van het Britse team, maar mogelijk maakt de renstal in Australië nog geen gebruik van de brandstoffen van haar nieuwe partner.

Tot en met eind 2018 werkte McLaren samen met BP/Castrol, dat ook brandstof levert aan het fabrieksteam van Renault. Bij de onthulling van de MCL34 vertelde CEO Zak Brown dat het team de intentie heeft de brandstoffen van Petrobras te gebruiken. Toch is nog niet duidelijk of dat tijdens de wintertests en bij aanvang van het nieuwe seizoen al gaat lukken.

Ook sportief directeur Gil de Ferran durft daar nog geen uitspraken over te doen. Volgens de Braziliaan is het nog onduidelijk wanneer McLaren van Petrobras-brandstof gebruik kan maken. "We werken samen met Petrobras nog aan de ontwikkeling, maar het is lastig om daar nu een tijdschaal voor te identificeren", vertelde hij aan Motorsport.com.

Brown benadrukte bij de presentatie van de nieuwe McLaren dat de relatie met Petrobras goed is en dat er dus gewerkt wordt aan nieuwe brandstoffen. "We hebben een geweldige relatie met Petrobras en momenteel ontwikkelen we brandstoffen met ze. Het is een erg technische relatie. De meeste brandstof- en oliemaatschappijen gebruiken de Formule 1 als ontwikkelingsplatform om hun merk mee op te bouwen. We zijn vaak in Brazilië met ze en ik heb er vertrouwen in dat we veel goede waarde aan ze leveren. Ik verwacht dat de relatie steeds succesvoller zal worden."

Abiteboul heeft zich in het verleden toch negatief uitgelaten tegenover klantenteams die een andere brandstofleverancier hebben? Is dat nu ineens geen probleem meer?

Lastig om hier iets over te roepen.
Formule 1 brandstofontwikkeling is natuurlijk wel iets bijzonders en of Petrobras daartoe in staat is?
Nu gaat de Petrobras steun dus nog om het schuiven van centjes. En da's nodig ook, want een brandstofdeal als optie bij de Renault motorendeal is kostbaar.
Of er met eigen brandstof-ontwikkeling prestatietechnisch nog iets te halen valt? Enerzijds verwacht ik van niet. Brandstof wordt op de motor afgestemd, maar in 't geval van het Renault fabrieksteam ook andersom. Renault zal zijn 'hardware' niet aanpassen aan de Petrobras peut. Wel zullen ze testbanktijd moeten aanbieden (extra verkopen) om het motormanagement op Petrobras aan te passen. Dat RedBull vorig jaar gebruik gemaakt heeft van de Spec-C, terwijl het fabrieksteam dat niet deed, scheen mogelijk gemaakt te zijn door de Esso brandstof. Maar toch denk ik dat je uiteindelijk toch altijd achter de feiten (en de ontwikkeling van het fabrieksteam) aanhobbelt wanneer je erop staat eigen brandstof te gaan gebruiken.
