Pietro Fittipaldi: "Ik dacht dat het team gisteren een grap met mij uithaalde"

Gistermiddag stond Pietro Fittipaldi op de baan naar de auto's te kijken. Richting het einde van de dag besloot de Braziliaan om zijn zonnebril op te halen in de engineers-room, omdat hij recht tegen de zon in keek. Toen hij bij zijn team vroeg de engineer of hij klaar was om in de auto te stappen.

"De engineer vroeg gisteren aan mij of ik klaar was om in de auto te stappen. Ik zei dat ik me goed voorbereid had voor morgen. Toen zei hij dat het om vandaag ging. Ik dacht dat hij een grapje maakte, maar hij bleek serieus te zijn. Ik heb toen snel mijn kleding aangetrokken. Het was een hele leuke verrassing", vertelde de enthousiaste Braziliaan.

Fittipaldi reed gisteren dertien ronden als soort van shakedown. Hij kreeg van het Rich Energy Haas F1-team de kans om alvast te wennen aan de auto. "Ik ben ze daarom ook heel dankbaar. Het heeft mij voor vandaag enorm geholpen."

Over de testdag van vandaag was Fittipaldi zeer tevreden: "Ik ben super blij met de auto, hij voelde geweldig aan. De auto was betrouwbaar, ondanks dat we een klein elektrisch probleem hadden. Ik ben ontzettend blij om bij Rich Energy Haas te zijn, het is een Amerikaans team en ik woon zelf ook in Amerika. Het is een fijne en goede omgeving om in te werken."

"Romain en Kevin helpen mij enorm en ik ben blij dat ik het team ook van de nodige feedback kan voorzien. Ik heb vandaag een aantal ronden achter de Mercedes van Valtteri Bottas gereden om te kijken hoe dat voelt. Ik moet zeggen dat ik enorm verrast ben over de downforce die deze nieuwe auto heeft", vertelde hij.

De jonge Braziliaan vertelde verder dat hij ervaring heeft om kort achter andere coureurs te rijden: "Ik heb veel geleerd om achter auto's te rijden tijdens mijn races in de Verenigde Staten toen ik op ovals reed. Daar heb ik geleerd om met deze turbulentie om te gaan."

Fittipaldi kwam tijdens de ochtendsessie tot 48 ronden. Zijn snelste tijd, gereden op de soft band, was 1:19.249. Morgenochtend zal Fittipaldi opnieuw in de auto stappen.

Mooi! Ik kan me voorstellen dat het een droom is voor veel jonge coureurs. Gaaf dat je dan onverwacht eerder mag instappen.
