Burgemeester Osaka wil Japanse Grand Prix op stratencircuit organiseren

Osaka wil graag de Grand Prix van Japan organiseren. De burgemeester van de stad heeft op een persconferentie aangegeven dat de race moet plaatsvinden op een door de mens aangelegd eiland, dat in 2025 de World Expo plaats van handeling is voor de World Expo.

De Grand Prix van Japan wordt momenteel georganiseerd op Suzuka, dat al sinds 1987 de locatie voor de race is. Ook op Fuji en op Okayama zijn in het verleden Formule 1-races geweest. Het contract van Suzuka loopt door tot en met 2021, maar Osaka zou de organisatie graag op zich nemen. De burgemeester van de op twee na grootste stad van Japan liet op een persconferentie doorschemeren dat Osaka nog wel naar investeerders zoekt.

"Als we uit de hele wereld investeringen kunnen aantrekken, dan kunnen we dingen doen die tot nu toe in Japan onmogelijk waren", vertelde burgemeester Hirofumi Yoshimura volgens Japan Today. "Racen op Yumeshima wordt dan misschien mogelijk. Het wordt wel lastig om wegen met normaal asfalt te gebruiken, dus we moeten ze met betere kwaliteit ontwerpen."

Yumeshima is de naam van het eiland dat in de baai van Osaka aangelegd gaat worden voor de World Expo van 2025. Op het eiland moet volgens Yoshimura ook een entertainmentcomplex komen met onder andere een casino. In die zin lijkt het project erg op het eiland Notre Dame in Montreal. De World Expo werd in 1967 op dat eiland gehouden en tegenwoordig wordt de Canadese Grand Prix daar verreden.

  Dit moet ook echt nooit gebeuren. Suzuka wordt door vrijwel elke coureur als het mooist en meest uitdagend gezien.
  Maar zo'n burgermeester gaat lopen likken bij LM, en als er genoeg geld op tafel komt, dan zijn Amerikanen zo om.

  Ben t eens met Royalere... Osaka is niet goed bij zn hoofd. F1 in Japan is Suzuka.
  Wat ik erg triest vind... is dat sinds Formule E groeit... alle landen in F1 ook ineens een stratencircuit willen. Ga dan lekker FE organiseren en houdt F1 gewoon op permanente banen (uitzonderingen daar gelaten)
