Albon tevreden na moeilijke start: "We zijn aan het finetunen"

Alexander Albon kende een moeilijke ochtend tijdens het begin van de tweede week van de wintertests. De Thaise Brit reed minder dan veertig ronden in de ochtend maar kwam na de lunch goed op gang. Met een tijd van 1:18.649 reed hij de zesde tijd. Hij was bijna een seconde trager dan de snelste tijd van Lando Norris. Toch was de nieuwkomer van Toro Rosso tevreden over zijn testdag.

"Het ging niet verkeerd", verklaarde Albon tegenover onder andere GPToday.net. "We hadden in het begin van de dag wat kleine probleempjes. Gelukkig ging het in de middag beter en kwamen we nog boven de 100 ronden uit."

De Italiaanse renstal had een aantal nieuwe onderdelen meegenomen naar Barcelona. Albon gaf toe dat hij wel moest wennen om weer terug te keren in de auto. "Er zijn sommige dingen waar ik aan moet werken, maar ik begin me steeds comforabeler te voelen in de auto. We zijn nu op het punt dat we alles moeten finetunen."

Albon gaf toe dat hij de auto beter moet leren kennen tijdens de longruns. "Ik moet leren om de auto te managen. Het belangrijkste is het managen van de banden en de werking van het stuur. Dit zijn twee cruciale punten waar ik tijd in moet stoppen. Dit is echt iets wat je zelf moet doen, aangezien je engineer dit niet voor je kan doen. Voor mij is het belangrijk om daar bekend mee te worden."

"We hebben geen problemen met de Honda-motor. Alles werkt heel erg soepel", verklaarde hij. "Ik moet wel toegeven dat het testen met een Formule 1-auto anders is als het testen met een Formule 2-auto. Wij rijden met deze auto's veel meer ronden. Het belangrijkste is om veel ervaring op te doen met de banden. Ik moet dit echt onder de knie krijgen. Qua grip is er niet echt veel verschil met de Formule 2."

"Het is belangrijk voor mij om snel in een ritme te komen, ook tijdens de longruns. Ik moet leren om niet te veel te sparen, ik mag soms wat meer vergen van het materiaal. Het heeft echt puur met de ervaring te maken. Ik zie Melbourne en Bahrein dan ook echt als een enorme uitdaging. Ik probeer me er in elk geval zo goed mogelijk op voor te bereiden. Ik wil mezelf testen en er voor zorgen dat ik alle procedures correct uitvoer. Dat is voor mij het belangrijkste op dit moment", sloot Albon af.

Goed bezig die jongen. Leren, leren en leren.
Langzaam beter worden is het devies.
Komt goed. Zeker omdat ook STR tevreden over hem is volgens het management.

  Inderdaad, hij klinkt realistisch, verstandig en leergierig.
  Als hij snel genoeg is en geen domme dingen doet, kan hij het wel een paar jaar volhouden binnen STR.

@GPToday: complimenten voor de nieuwe site en voor de artikelen die toenemen in kwaliteit. Het is te merken dat jullie daarin investeren.

Een klein puntje van kritiek: ik zie steeds vaker ‘anders als’ of ‘beter als’; ook in dit artikel. Normaal gesproken laat ik taalfouten voor wat ze zijn, maar als/dan zou ik toch graag goed gebruikt zien.
