David Coulthard debuteerde in 1994 in de Formule 1 en kende een bijzondere carrière. De Schot verving vanaf de Grand Prix van Spanje in 1994 de overleden Ayrton Senna. Na twee jaren te hebben gereden voor het team van Williams stapte hij in 1996 over naar McLaren waar hij uiteindelijk zijn teamgenoot Mika Hakkinen twee keer wereldkampioen zag worden.

Maar liefst negen jaar reed Coulthard voor het team van McLaren. Daarna stapte hij over naar het nieuwe Red Bull Racing waar hij van 2005 tot en met 2008 actief was. Op 2 november 2008 reed David Coulthard in Brazilië zijn laatste Grand Prix uit zijn carrière. In totaal kwam hij tot 246 Grand Prix-starts.
