Albon moet nog wennen aan handelingen in Formule 1-auto

De Grand Prix van Australië van komend weekend wordt de debuutrace in de Formule 1 voor Alexander Albon. De Thai voelt zich redelijk goed voorbereid, maar weet wel dat zijn rijden nog instinctiever en natuurlijker moet worden.

Albon heeft pas weinig ervaring in een Formule 1-auto. Hij werd na de tests in Abu Dhabi pas aangekondigd als tweede coureur van Scuderia Toro Rosso en maakte zodoende pas tijdens de wintertests in Barcelona voor het eerst kennis met een Formule 1-auto. In zijn allereerste ronde spinde Albon meteen van de baan, maar daarna herstelde hij zich snel en goed door veel te rijden en een prima tempo te laten zien.

Desondanks weet Albon dat hij nog maar weinig ervaring in een Formule 1-auto heeft en dat betekent volgens hemzelf dat hij zich nog een beetje moet aanpassen aan de bolide. "Ik boek snel progressie. Het draait er nu om dat ik gebruik maak van alle tools die ik tot mijn beschikking heb. Ik kan nog veel terrein winnen op het gebied van het managen van de banden en de juiste knoppen op het juiste moment indrukken."

"Alles moet nog natuurlijk en instinctief worden en dat is het nu niet", vervolgt Albon tegenover Auto Hebdo. "Mijn engineer moet nog steeds een aantal dingen voorstellen, maar ik voel me beter en beter. Ik heb ook vertrouwen nodig in snelle bochten en ik moet de juiste balans vinden tussen wel of niet aanvallen. Het managen van de race heeft oefening nodig. Melbourne wordt daarom een levensgrote repetitie."

  Ik zie meerderen dit zeggen. Maar persoonlijk bevalt me die afwachtende houding wel in plaats van zichzelf al concreet te presenteren als iemand met een vastgesteld karakter terwijl hij nog niet eens een race gereden heeft.

Voor mij de verrassing van de wintertests. Liet een prima snelheid zien en komt buiten de auto ook sympathiek over.

Even voor de kenners onder ons ...
Heb ik nu goed begrepen dat de settings van Max zijn F1 stuurtje ( knoppen, indeling, afstelling ) nu weer totaal anders is i.v..m de Hondamotor ?

  Met name de software op het scherm van z'n stuurtje is anders. De knoppen/layout etc is (binnen de mogelijkheden) Max z'n eigen keus. Engineering maakt het stuurtje zoals Max dat prettig vind.

  Stuurtje met knoppen en display en leds zijn gewoon een interface tussen rijder en ECU. Dit kan aangepast worden, naar de behoefte van de rijder. Dus Max kan, als ie wil, met hetzelfde stuurtje rijden als vorig jaar.
  De fucties van de ICU en MGK's en bijv. dif zijn natuurlijk grotendeels hetzelfde tussen alle PU's. Of je nu een qualy mapping kiest op een Renault motor of op een Honda motor.....je kiest gewoon een mapping, die keuzefunctie blijft hetzelfde. Met ce software tussen stuur en ECU kun je met het stuurtje met iedere motor rijden.

Ben ik het helemaal mee eens. Ik denk als hij met deze "leermomenten" al zo een strakke rondes kan rijden dat hij wel eens erg goed kan gaan worden in de toekomst ! Aardige en sympathieke gozer trouwens.

  Ik wacht het allemaal nog even af, strakke rondjes rijden tijdens een test is nog iets anders dan racen.
  Kan ook zomaar zijn dat hij in de race tegen gaat vallen, en dan zijn de berichten over hem ineens weer heel anders.
  Hij liet een goede indruk achter tijdens de tests, maar een race weekend is iets anders.

  Verwacht er de eerste races niet te veel van. Snelle rondes rijden is niet hetzelfde als racen tegen andere coureurs. Dat vraagt toutine en vertrouwen en dat komt met elke race een beetje meer. Ik zie hem daarom nog niet direct aanvallen in Melbourne, maar ik laat me graag verassen.
