Hamilton: "Mercedes vertelde geen onzin over vorm tijdens wintertests"

Coureurs en teams proberen vaak het belang van de resultaten van de wintertests zo klein mogelijk te maken, maar de gesproken woorden van Mercedes in Barcelona waren niet gelogen. Volgens Lewis Hamilton klopt het namelijk dat het team na de tests een hoop werk te doen had.

Mercedes liet een redelijk goede indruk achter tijdens de tests in Barcelona. De W10 oogde vooral erg betrouwbaar, maar op de laatste testdag toonde Hamilton aan dat de snelheid ook goed zat. Hij noteerde op 3 duizendsten van Sebastian Vettel de tweede tijd van de week. Desondanks lieten de regerend wereldkampioenen in Spanje optekenen dat het team mogelijk een halve seconde achter Ferrari zou liggen en dat ze nog een hoop werk te verrichten hebben.

Tijdens de persconferentie in Melbourne liet Hamilton doorschemeren dat aan die woorden niets gelogen was. "Het is lastig te weten wat iedereen doet tijdens de tests. Meestal weten we het niet helemaal tot we op vrijdag in de auto stappen. In de kwalificatie krijg je een beter beeld en gedurende de eerste races krijg je echt een idee waar iedereen staat. We zeiden echter dat we werk te doen hadden en dat is geen onzin. We hebben ook echt werk te doen."

Hamilton prees hoe teambaas Toto Wolff het team na de tests bij de arm nam, om zodoende verbeteringen gedurende het seizoen mogelijk te maken. "We hebben geweldige mensen in het team. Het is inspirerend om zoveel mensen met zoveel energie samen te zien en de communicatie is beter dan ooit. Net na de test ging ik terug, Toto trommelde alle troepen op en we hadden een groot overleg."

"Het is indrukwekkend om zoveel mensen te zien die gepassioneerd aan het werk zijn en een passie hebben voor racen. Ze willen het altijd beter doen, zich verbeteren en weten waar ze zich kunnen verbeteren. Dat is tof om te zien en erg bemoedigend. Ik weet dan ook dat zij de echte strijders binnen dit team zijn en ze zullen alles geven om ervoor te zorgen dat we vooruitgang boeken."

Tja, was gewoon te verwachten hoor, dat ze mee vooraan stonden.
Wat dat betreft waren het weer klassieke wintertests; bloedsnel Ferrari, gematigd Mercedes en wat subtoppers of achterhoede teams met een gloryrun.

Zoals gewoonlijk doet Mercedes weer alsof ze achter liggen en word het heel spannend dit jaar. Lijkt wel op de politiek, ook die vertellen een slap verhaal om mensen maar tevreden te houden. En ja ik mag hopen dat ze allemaal hard werken om hun voorsprong te behouden. Zou wel schandalig zijn als ze dat niet doen.
