Russell: "FW42 niet zo slecht als rondetijden doen geloven"

George Russell werkte vrijdag zijn eerste officiële werkdag als racecoureur van Williams af. De debutant noteerde in Australië de twintigste en de negentiende tijd en had graag verder naar voren willen staan, maar desondanks was de Brit na afloop niet somber gestemd.

Williams miste de eerste twee dagen van de wintertest en het team kondigde al aan dat het de eerste races van 2019 als een veredelde test ziet. Russell wist daarom wat hem te wachten stond in Melbourne en in de eerste twee trainingen kwam hij er dan ook niet aan te pas. In vrije training 1 eindigde de Brit op de laatste positie op ruim vijf seconden achterstand van snelste man Lewis Hamilton, in VT2 werd hij op bijna vier seconden negentiende.

Hoewel de posities niet goed en de achterstand veel te groot was, zag Russell toch positieve kanten. “De auto is natuurlijk niet perfect, maar hij is ook niet zo slecht als dat de rondetijden doen geloven. Als je me vooraf had gezegd dat we vijf seconden te langzaam zouden zijn, dan had ik verwacht dat de auto nogal lastig te besturen zou zijn. Natuurlijk kunnen we wel dingen verbeteren en het een en ander finetunen", vertelde de Williams-coureur aan onder andere GPToday.net in Melbourne.

De huidige incarnatie van de FW42 is volgens Russell dan ook een prima platform voor Williams om op verder te bouwen. “Ik denk dat dit wel een basis is om op verder te bouwen. Vorig jaar had Williams veel problemen met de driveability van de auto, maar dit jaar valt dat erg mee. De mannen kunnen zich nu richten op het zorgen voor meer downforce op deze auto.”

Zijn eerste echte werkdag als Formule 1-coureur zal Russell zich nog lang blijven herinneren, ondanks de matige tijden die hij en Williams noteerden. “Het was geweldig om hier te rijden. Eerlijk gezegd was ik een beetje verrast dat de auto niet al te slecht aanvoelde tijdens het rijden. De rondetijden zijn alleen niet goed. Voor een coureur is dit een geweldig circuit met alle fans hier en al met al was het geweldig. Dit is iets wat ik me lang zal blijven herinneren.”

Eerlijk verhaal. Williams gaat echt nog wel aanhaken. Dit verschil is nu te groot nu om hier nu echt een oordeel over te vellen.

  @Damon Hill, het verschil is gewoon te groot nu. Op basis van deze data kan je stellen dat de auto nog slechter is dan vorig jaar. Dat lijkt mij niet het geval, dat geven ook de coureurs aan. Laten we komende races afwachten hoe het team zich ontwikkeld.

Het ligt vast allemaal aan de zwakke motor.... want de wagen is niet zo slecht.

  Ik denk dat ze dit seizoen wel de stappen kunnen maken en als ze hadden kunnen testen in Barcelona stonden ze misschien al iets dichter op de anderen.
  Ze weten dat die motor goed is dus het is een kwestie van de juiste updates op die auto gooien en dan komen ze er wel.
  Ze zullen de eerste races gewoon stijf achteraan staan maar denk dat 3/4 races ze echt wel de eerste andere rijders kunnen aanvallen.

Williams kan zich richten op het sneller maken van de auto en niet op de problemen verhelpen die de auto onbestuurbaar maken. Een heel verschil met vorig jaar.
Over een aantal races zit Williams er gewoon bij.

  Wisfull thinking ben ik bang. Er is geen geld, geen beleid en geen enkel signaal waarop je dit zou kunnen baseren.
  
  Aangezien Claire niet wil dat Williams een B-team wordt van een grote fabrikant, ben ik bang dat het einde voor dit team nabij is.

Het waren vrije trainingen maar toch zie een te groot verschil.. en niet eens ten opzichte de snelste tijden maar voorlaatste. Ik vermoed dat Williams dit seizoen een race tegen de klok moet doen en iig tot einde van seizoen zo'n achterstaand tov voorlaatste weg moeten werken. Subtop is nog steeds een uitdaging tenzij er gekke dingen ineens gaan gebeuren.
