Raikkonen 'een beetje teleurgesteld' na eerste kwalificatie van 2019

Kimi Raikkonen start zondag vanaf de negende positie bij de Grand Prix van Australië. De Finse coureur, die in 2019 terugkeert op het oude nest bij Alfa Romeo (het voormalige Sauber), had zich meer voorgesteld van de eerste kwalificatie van het seizoen.

Na vijf seizoenen in dienst van Ferrari is Raikkonen wederom bij een voormalig werkgever in dienst getreden. Bij Alfa Romeo leek de snelheid in de eerste twee vrije trainingen prima met twee zesde plaatsen. In de derde vrije training viel de tijd van Raikkonen wat tegen door verkeer, maar in de kwalificatie stond hij er weer.

Raikkonen drong met de C38 door tot het derde deel van de kwalificatie, nadat hij Q1 met de hakken over de sloot overleefde. Uiteindelijk start de wereldkampioen van 2007 vanaf de negende positie, maar dat is niet waar hij op gehoopt had. "Ik ben een beetje teleurgesteld. Ik denk dat er meer snelheid in de auto zit maar ik heb het niet voor elkaar gekregen om één volledige goede ronde te rijden. Ik denk dat we veel geleerd hebben en we moeten proberen onze positie morgen te verbeteren."

De overstap van het grote Ferrari naar het bescheiden Alfa Romeo bevalt Raikkonen niet slecht. Naar eigen zeggen is er voor hem niet veel veranderd, behalve dat hij voor een nieuw team rijdt. "Er is voor mij niet zo veel veranderd. Ik wisselde van team. Ik rijd nu voor andere posities op de baan, maar ik weet wel dat we veel potentieel hebben. We hebben een hele goede groep mensen en ik ben heel blij met waar ik ben."

Raikkonen roemt de eenheid die Alfa Romeo en Sauber vormen. "We hebben geweldige partners. Alfa Romeo en Sauber zijn daar onderdeel van. De engineering wordt nog steeds door Sauber gedaan en we zitten ook in hun fabriek. Zoals ik al zei, we hebben een mooie groep mensen om mee te werken. Ik ben echt niet belangrijker dan wie dan ook daar. Het is en blijft een teamprestatie en we doen het met elkaar. Wij moeten er voor zorgen dat we zo goed mogelijke resultaten halen. Er is nog veel werk te doen maar tot nu toe is het echt niet slecht."
