Carlos Sainz met motorprobleem: "Op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plaats"

Zijn eerste kwalificatie als coureur van McLaren had Carlos Sainz zich ongetwijfeld anders voorgesteld. Hij start de eerste race van het seizoen op de achttiende positie en legde het daarmee ruim af tegen teamgenoot Lando Norris, die het derde deel van de kwalificatie wist te bereiken.

Sainz kwam afgelopen winter over van Renault, waar hij iets meer dan een seizoen de teamgenoot was van Nico Hülkenberg. In Australië hoopte de Spanjaard met een goede kwalificatie te beginnen aan zijn periode bij McLaren, maar in het kwalificatieduel begint hij nu dus met een achterstand ten opzichte van debutant Norris.

Desondanks is Sainz niet ontevreden over de nieuwe McLaren-bolide. De achttiende startpositie is misschien niet waar hij op hoopte, maar hij ziet wel een aantal lichtpuntjes. Wel hangt er een donkere sluier over zijn ronde heen: een probleem met de Renault-motor. "Ik ben tevreden over de balans van de auto. De eerste run ging hartstikke goed. Ik reed een hele goede ronde, ondanks het feit dat we een motorprobleem hadden.

Sainz kwam aan het einde van zijn tweede run Robert Kubica tegen. Kubica raakte de muur en de gele vlag kwam uit. Hierdoor kon de hij zijn tijd niet verbeteren. Desondanks neemt hij de Williams-coureur niets kwalijk. "We moeten verbeteren. Ik was goed op weg in mijn tweede run, maar toen kwam ik Robert tegen met een lekke band. De gele vlaggen hebben ervoor gezorgd dat ik op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plaats was. Ik neem Robert niets kwalijk."

De voormalige Toro Rosso- en Renault-coureur is optimistisch over de race van morgen. "Ik denk dat we erbij zitten. Het wordt wel zoeken naar die laatste tienden van een seconde die we nodig hebben om verder vooraan te staan", sloot hij af.

McLaren ziet er toch redelijk strak uit, incidentje van Kubica kost Sainz een beter resultaat.. Carlos zal echt niet minder zijn dan Norris, dat zou WEL pijnlijk zijn....

Sainz reed het hele weekend al een aantal tienden voor Norris.
Op de website van McLaren concluderen zowel Gil de Ferran als Sainz, dat Q3 makkelijk haalbaar zou zijn geweest.

Over motorproblemen heb ik niets gehoord of gelezen, ben benieuwd wat dat dan zou moeten zijn.

  Na de race dus duidelijk een probleem, hij plofte nogal snel. Erg jammer voor Sainz.

2 teams met honds no problem. 2 teams met renault en 2 teams met problemen want hulkenberg had ook problemen. we zullen morgen zien wat het wordt.
