Kubica: "Auto voelt anders dan in vorige weekends, dus dat is goed"

Robert Kubica ziet positieve signalen bij Williams tijdens de Grand Prix van China. De FW42 voelt volgens hem 'anders' aan dan eerst en dat is een ontwikkeling in de goede richting.

De seizoensstart van Williams was verre van goed. Kubica en teamgenoot George Russell verdeelden steevast de laatste twee posities. In China was dat in de eerste twee vrije trainingen niet anders, maar toch kijkt Kubica met een goed gevoel terug op de eerste dag van het 1000ste Grand Prix-weekend. De Pool voelde dat de auto zich anders gedroeg dan in Australië en Bahrein en dat is volgens hem een positief teken.

"In het algemeen voelt de auto anders aan dan in de vorige twee weekends, dus dat is een goed teken. We moeten nu naar de data kijken en bekijken wat we moeten doen. De balans is echter flink anders dan in de vorige races. De karakteristieken van de auto zijn veranderd en het voelt alsof de auto anders reageert."

Russell ziet goede ontwikkeling

Kubica eindigde in de tweede vrije training voor Russell. De Britse debutant was na de eerste sessies van het weekend niet helemaal tevreden over zijn snelheid over een snelle ronde, maar ziet zijn racepace er in verhouding beter voorstaat. Het gat met de concurrentie lijkt ook iets kleiner te zijn en dat stemt Russell positief.

"De snelheid op de lange runs lijkt bij mij beter dan die op de snelle runs. Ik heb moeite met de vliegende ronde, maar het is pas de eerste dag en ik kijk uit naar morgen. Als team lijken we dichterbij de rest te zitten dan eerder, dus we gaan de goede kant op. We moeten er het beste van maken, alles blijven geven, de auto leren begrijpen en zien wat we morgen kunnen doen."

Qua tijden zie ik het nog niet echt maar ik ben blij dat de coureurs de sfeer er goed in houden. En betrouwbaar zijn ze wel, dus in een race met veel uitvallers kan er zomaar een puntje gepakt worden.

  Wat mij opviel tijdens de onboard beelden van Kubica is dat hij met ‘n ander stuurtje rijd dan de rest. Nou weet ik niet of dit bij Russel ook zo is, maar bij Kubica zit er geen schermpje op zijn stuur, dit zit vast tegen de cockpit.
  
  Het kan dus twee dingen zijn, of ivm de kosten is dit een goedkopere optie voor de stuurtjes, of het is (wat mij logisch lijkt) ivm zijn handicap.
  
  Dus ... iemand of dit bij Russel ook zo is?

  @elektropunkz, is bij Russel ook. Was vorig jaar ook al zo bij Williams. 2016 en ervoor weet ik niet. Zou ik na moeten kijken.

Als de Williams anders aanvoelt kan het ook alleen maar beter gaan.....
Blijft wel ontzettend jammer dat ze dit jaar blijkbaar weer de plank hebben misgeslagen bij Williams...

ik heb wel sympathiek voor ze. Of het slim is wat ze doen is een ander verhaal. ze willen gewoon williams blijven zonder geregel van buiten af. ik heb er wel respect voor. Mooie wagen ook.

Kubica zag vandaag sterk uit hoor tegenover Russell die toch best goed is.

En in Bahrain deed hij ook al nauwelijks onder voor Russell terwijl hij allerlei problemen had. Volgens mij gaat Kubica het stiekem veel beter doen dan het nu lijkt maar de vraag is of hij nog echt een kans bij een beter team krijgt met die leeftijd en het handicap. Gevoelsmatig gaat hij die kans helaas niet meer krijgen zelfs als hij competitief is.

  Die handicap kan toch moeilijk nog een issue zijn, anders ga je niet sneller dan je teamgenoot, het is eerder de vraag of hij nog terug naar zijn oude niveau kan groeien.
