Binotto: "Mick Schumacher leek erg op zijn vader tijdens test"

Mattia Binotto kijkt met veel tevredenheid terug op de eerste Formule 1-test van Mick Schumacher in Bahrein. De teambaas van Ferrari stelt dat de Formule 2-coureur in zijn aanpak sterk lijkt op zijn vader, zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Michael.

Schumacher testte in Bahrein voor het eerst met een Formule 1-auto. Op de eerste dag stapte hij in bij Ferrari, op dag 2 voor Alfa Romeo Racing. Binotto gaf toe dat hij de Duitser in eerste instantie niet op zijn vader vond lijken door de uiterlijke verschillen. Tijdens de persconferentie op de vrijdag kwam hij daar echter op terug, want hij meende dat de aanpak van Schumacher junior wel gelijkenissen vertoont.

"Als je naar hem kijkt, denk ik niet dat hij heel erg op Michael lijkt. Wel in de manier waarop hij zich gedraagt. Dat geldt ook voor de manier waarop hij de oefening benadert en de manier waarop hij geïnteresseerd is in de auto, hoe hij erover praat met de monteurs. Als je hem in Maranello zoekt, is hij altijd in de werkplaats bij de auto's aan het praten met monteurs. Daarin lijkt hij heel erg op zijn vader."

Beoordelen prestatie Schumacher lastig

Schumacher won in 2018 het Europees Formule 3 en trad afgelopen winter toe tot de Ferrari Driver Academy. In de test na de Bahreinse Grand Prix mocht hij dus voor het eerst proeven aan de huidige generatie Formule 1-auto's, maar Binotto vond het lastig om conclusies te trekken over hoe Schumacher gepresteerd heeft. De reden daarvoor lag bij hij weer: het regende namelijk op het Bahrain International Circuit.

"Het is lastig om de prestatie te beoordelen, omdat het weer erg slecht was op die dag. Ook was het beoordelen van de prestatie uiteindelijk niet het doel. Het was zijn eerste dag in een Formule 1-auto. Daarnaast zit hij nog in de leerfase, waarbij hij voor een compleet nieuwe uitdaging staat in zijn Formule 2-seizoen."

"Ik denk dat het positief was om te zien hoe hij de oefening benaderde, zijn testdag benaderde. Daarbij zocht hij nooit de limiet, hij probeerde zich iedere run te verbeteren, de auto en het team te leren kennen en wat dat betreft heft hij het goed gedaan: zeer gefocust en geconcentreerd, waarbij hij het goed probeerde te doen en veel probeerde te leren. Dat is het maximale wat je mag verwachten van zo'n dag."

Ik hoop dat hij vooral als Mick beoordeeld wordt. Dat hij met zijn vader wordt vergeleken is logisch, maar ik hoop wel dat hij vooral zichzelf mag zijn.

  Kijk Damon Hill kwam ook in de F1 dmv zijn achternaam, de prestaties van Hill voor de F1 waren absoluut niet goed genoeg om door te stoten voor zover ik het nog kan herinneren won hij nooit een race in F3000 (huidige F2), hij nam het daarin op tegen oa Eddie Irvine, Comas en Van de Poele, toch werd hij WK en kon aardig mee.
  
  Dus stop jij anders even met anderen na te praten en iemand neer te sabbelen voor hij zich kon bewijzen, ga anders even uit de zee drinken ofzo.
