Franz Tost wilde een agressieve Albon zien tijdens de Chinese Grand Prix

Scuderia Toro Rosso-teambaas Franz Tost heeft voorafgaande aan de Grand Prix van China Alexander Albon de opdracht gegeven om een agressieve race te rijden. Albon, die tijdens de derde vrije training zijn auto stuk reed bij het opkomen van het rechte stuk, moest zondagmiddag vanuit de pits starten.

In plaats van te kiezen voor een conservatieve strategie ging de Thaise-coureur met een nieuwe set van de zachte banden van start. Hij slaagde erin om 19 ronden te rijden en wisselde daarna naar de harde band. Deze keuze zorgde ervoor dat hij de coureurs die een tweede pitstop maakte voor kon blijven. De tiende plaats leverde Albon de titel 'Driver of the Day' op.

In gesprek met Adam Cooper vertelde Franz Tost het volgende: "Alex reed een fantastische race en scoorde voor de tweede keer punten. Ik ben erg blij met zijn prestaties en hoe hij deze race heeft gereden. Het was een perfecte race, zonder incidenten en ook zijn inhaalacties waren goed. Het was een verdiend punt, want vanaf vrijdag liet hij al goede dingen zien met de auto. Tot aan zijn klap op zaterdagmorgen was hij uitstekend onderweg", loofde Tost zijn pupil.

"Natuurlijk hadden wij veel werk om de auto opnieuw op te bouwen, omdat het chassis beschadigd was. We moesten alles veranderen. Het is een goed punt voor het team, voor de monteurs en voor alle andere mensen. We hebben keihard gewerkt om alles klaar te krijgen en als je jezelf dan kan belonen met één punt is dat geweldig. Ik had Alexander vooraf aangegeven dat ik wilde dat hij 'agressief' zou rijden."

Tost is er zeker van dat Scuderia Toro Rosso voor de punten kan rijden. "Ik denk dat we een goed pakket hebben. We hebben in alle drie races punten gescoord en als we tijdens de kwalificatie in Q3 kunnen komen zit er misschien nog meer in het vat. Het potentieel van de auto is duidelijk, de coureurs doen het zeer goed, het team maakt progressie en daarom denk ik dat we in de komende races meer punten zullen scoren", sloot de tevreden teambaas af.

Albon is in heel veel dingen nog echt een Rookie en of het nou een echte snelle coureur kan worden weet ik ook niet, maar voorlopig is hij het seizoen goed begonnen als Rookie. Hij laat leuke dingen zien en het is vanaf nu afwachten hoe hij zich zal ontwikkelen.

  Doe niet zo simpel zeg... Dat het bij Max voorkwam wil niet zeggen dat ze maar blijven rondstrooien met zitjes. David Coulthard kon toch ook gewoon het seizoen aan blijven toen Vettel de race in Monza won? Riccardo moest ook wachten op het juiste moment dat Webber zelf ook wou vertrekken... Max was een unieke situatie met vele factoren: De druk van Mercedes en Ferrari, De slechte motor van Renault, een Kvyat die niet goed in zijn vel zat en een Verstappen die uiterst goed presteerde die honger kreeg naar meer dan alleen punten. Totaal niet aan de orde nu.

STR is gewoon een leuk team, altijd geweest. Ze doen daar leuke dingen, hebben echter niet hoge verwachtingen waar te maken. En met Albon en Kvyat een prima rijdersduo. Gaan we nog leuke dingen van zien dit seizoen.

Albon at in de pitbox een pittige Thaise curry, stapte in en reed zijn Toro Rosso aan flarden, "Hier heb je agressief Franz"

Zonder gekheid, ik vind Albon tot dusver een beetje dé verrassing van de laatste debutanten, gezien zijn minimale F1 ervaring doet hij het best goed.
