Carlos Sainz is het seizoen met McLaren nog niet lekker begonnen. Terwijl zijn teamgenoot in Bahrein een zesde plaats veroverde en 8 punten voor het kampioenschap zag Sainz in zowel Australië als Bahrein de finishvlag niet. In China kwam hij wel tot de finish, echter slechts op een veertiende positie.

Een opmerkelijk filmpje is nu opgedoken op internet. Carlos Sainz wordt na de Grand Prix van Australië door de politie aangehouden en moet zich onderwerpen aan een blaastest. De bijrijder die het incident filmpje moest net als Sainz lachen dat een Formule 1-coureur getest wordt op alcohol.
