Sainz: "Bij fouten van de top 6 is podium mogelijk in Bakoe"

Carlos Sainz hoopt in Bakoe zijn eerste goede resultaat voor McLaren te behalen. De Spanjaard scoorde nog geen punten in de eerste drie races, maar denkt dat er in Azerbeidzjan kansen zijn op een goed resultaat als hij foutloos blijft.

Hoewel de resultaten van Sainz anders doen vermoeden (een uitvalbeurt, P19 en P14), is de coureur van McLaren tevreden over de manier waarop hij zijn seizoen begonnen is. Alleen de resultaten zijn nog niet naar zijn zin, zo vertelde hij GPToday.net in Bakoe. “Het seizoen is voor mij op veel gebieden goed begonnen, behalve qua resultaten aan de finish. Als je dit buiten beschouwing laat, ben ik erg tevreden met hoe de eerste drie races gegaan zijn.”

Verrassing mogelijk bij problemen top 6

De Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan staat sinds 2016 al garant voor verrassingen. In alle edities eindigde er een coureur uit de middenmoot op het podium. Sainz beseft dat ook en weet dat het van belang is om een probleemloze race te rijden, omdat er dan veel mogelijk is. "Dit is zeker een belangrijk weekend om bovenop problemen met de betrouwbaarheid te zitten en om ervoor te zorgen dat je over het algemeen een soepel weekend hebt."

"Normaal gesproken levert dat je veel op hier. Je hoeft niet eens de snelste auto in de middenmoot te zijn om een goed resultaat te behalen. Je hebt alleen een goede basis en een probleemloos weekend nodig in Bakoe, tenzij het net als in 2016 een saaie race is. In 2017 en 2018 waren het absoluut leuke races.”

Sainz werd in 2017 vijfde in Azerbeidzjan, mede doordat Red Bull-coureurs Daniel Ricciardo en Max Verstappen destijds crashten. Voor een herhaling van een dergelijk resultaat is de Spanjaard wel afhankelijk van problemen of fouten bij de toppers. "Dat hangt niet af van de auto's in de middenmoot, maar van de auto's in de top. Als zij fouten maken en jij de race netjes uitrijdt als beste van de rest, dan kan je derde worden. Het is absoluut een goede kans."

Gewoon de gehele top 6 in de eerste paar bochten eraf. Dan ga je pas een race zien denk ik :p wie gaar dan voor een ´safe´ podium en wie heeft er echt ballen en wil winnen.

Volgens mij denkt het gehele middenveld in de top 5 te kunnen eindigen zondag.

Een podium voor McLaren zou weer een keer mooi zijn. Alles is mogeiljk. Als ze er een beetje goed bijzitten en ze blijven uit de problemen kan er van alles gebeuren
