Ferrari kiest voor redelijk grote achtervleugel in Azerbeidzjan

Ferrari heeft een opvallende keuze gemaakt met de achtervleugel die het mee heeft genomen naar Azerbeidzjan. Daar waar de concurrentie massaal voor minimalistische achtervleugels lijkt te kiezen, heeft het Italiaanse team toch voor een redelijk grote achtervleugel gekozen.

Het Baku City Circuit bezorgt de Formule 1-teams een bijzondere uitdaging. Het stratencircuit bevat een recht stuk van 2,2 kilometer waar weinig downforce en een hoge topsnelheid van belang zijn. Daarnaast is tractie ook belangrijk, omdat het circuit veel bochten van 90 graden bevat die gevolgd worden door zones waarin flink geaccelereerd moet worden.

Meer downforce voor teams met Ferrari-motor

De meeste teams kijken in Bakoe hun geld te zetten op topsnelheid: Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, Renault en Toro Rosso hebben allen voor een aanzienlijk kleinere achtervleugel gekozen. De teams met Ferrari-motoren zijn de vreemde eend in de bijt. Naast Ferrari hebben ook Alfa Romeo en Haas F1 gekozen voor een grotere achtervleugel dan de concurrentie.

Een mogelijke verklaring daarvoor zou gevonden kunnen worden in de kracht van de Ferrari-motor. Die motor lijkt in 2019 tot nu toe op de rechte stukken een aanzienlijk voordeel op te leveren ten opzichte van de overige krachtbronnen. Dat voordeel zou Ferrari, Haas en Alfa Romeo in staat kunnen stellen om met meer downforce te rijden en zodoende tijd te winnen in de bochten.

Meer updates voor Ferrari

Ferrari kondigde eerder deze week aan dat het een eerste pakket aan updates voor de SF90 mee ging nemen naar Azerbeidzjan. In de paddock is inmiddels voor een deel duidelijk geworden waaruit dit pakket met updates uit bestaat. De meest opvallende wijziging is dus de achtervleugel, die meer een lepelvorm aanneemt dan voorheen.

Daarnaast zag technisch journalist Albert Fabrega dat Ferrari ook veranderingen aan de barge boards, de bodemplaat en de diffuser doorgevoerd heeft. Ten slotte heeft men ook de turning vanes onder de neus aangepast voor de race in Azerbeidzjan.
