Williams begint ontwikkeling FW42 met 'kleine, spannende' update in Spanje

Williams komt tijdens de Grand Prix van Spanje van komend weekend met de eerste update voor de FW42. Dat dit nu pas gebeurt, komt doordat het team in eerste instantie een achterstand moest inlopen en daardoor lag de ontwikkeling van de bolide zo goed als stil.

Na vier races in 2019 is Williams het enige team dat nog geen punten heeft weten te scoren. De FW42 bleek in deze races nog niet de auto te zijn die het Britse team een opmars naar voren laat maken, want de achterstand op de concurrentie was telkens veel te groot. Een van de oorzaken daarvan is dat Williams zich al in de voorbereiding op het seizoen lelijk in de voet schoot.

Russell heeft vertrouwen in maken progressie

Het lukte niet om de nieuwe bolide op tijd gereed te maken voor de eerste wintertest. Pas tijdens de derde dag kwam de FW42 van Williams voor het eerst in actie. In de aanloop naar de race in Melbourne moesten vervolgens een aantal onderdelen op de auto opnieuw ontworpen worden om ze te laten voldoen aan de reglementen. In Spanje volgt er echter een eerste update. Die zullen volgens George Russell een indicatie geven of het seizoen nog te redden valt voor Williams.

"Vanaf nu gaat het makkelijker worden en ik heb er vertrouwen in dat we progressie boeken. Het team werkt extreem hard en we hebben een aantal spannende dingen in de pijplijn zitten. Ik weet niet precies hoe dichtbij deze updates ons gaan brengen bij de rest van het veld, maar deze lastige weekenden maken ons sterker. Ik geloof dat we het op een gegeven moment om kunnen draaien."

Williams zal in Barcelona nog niet het volledige pakket aan updates op de auto schroeven. Volgens Russell richten de veranderingen voor komende race zich op verschillende aspecten, zoals de aerodynamica en de remmen. "Het zal ons duidelijke aanwijzingen geven over waar we ons op moeten richten. Gebaseerd op deze resultaten zal het ons laten begrijpen of we nog hoop mogen hebben voor de rest van het seizoen."

Hopelijk komen ze iets dichterbij. In Russel zie ik een enorm talent, groter nog dan bijvoorbeeld Norris... maar op deze manier kun je dat niet zo snel zien. Ik hoop dus op een lichtpuntje, of misschien zelfs een verdwaald puntje na een hoop uitvallers :)

  Tsja, een auto door ontwikkelen die bij voorbaat al 1 seconde achter ligt op de auto's die direct voor je staat lijkt me nog veel kanslozer.

Poehh, op dit moment gunt bijna iedereen het hun. Zelfs ik, als anti-Williams, wil graag dat ze weer voor de top gaan strijden. Maar ja, in onze commerciële wereldje van tegenwoordig zal lastig voor prive-teams zijn en ze moeten iemand a la Honda binnen halen met veel centjes en wat meer exclusiviteit. Wishfull thinking maar het zou gaaf zijn om een Williams-Porsche mee te maken.

  Alsof Honda belangstelling zou hebben in een samenwerking met het huidige Williams team, dat wordt bij voorbaat een mislukt project en een hoop imago schade voor het merk.

  Dat heeft meer met verleden te maken en in is zeer individueel/subjectief.
  Ik ken weinig Schumacher-fans die ook Williams-fans zijn. Het mag uiteraard wel.
  Aan de andere kant, was Williams ook (whatever the reason) een van de weinige teams die meestal zonder te grote namen kampioen werd. En dat, terwijl de zonder-twijfel-op-dat-moment beste coureurs niuet een kans maakten terwijl het duidelijk was dat ze echt de besten waren. Met name 1992, 1996 en 1997 waren goede voorbeelden hiervan. Niks ten nadele van prestaties van Williams maar daar heb ik alleen grote respect voor: wat anders is is dan fan zijn.

  Niemand zei dat ze Honda moeten hebben; het was slechts een voorbeeld om ook zoiets aan te trekken. Ook al is het maar voor een financiële injectie. Maar beter dat dan papa Stroll 2.0.

  volgens mijn had BMW ook nog veel geld in gepompt maar de verwachtings patroon viel tegen toen zijn ze maar op hun eigen begonnen... hopelijk brengt die kleine update op de goede spoor voor een grote update... maar de problemen zit dieper dan dat. beter iemand aanstellen die opwaards kan managen.

  Het verwachtingspatroon viel helemaal niet tegen. BMW wilde gewoon Williams overkopen maar is toen op een "njet" gestoten. In ruil hebben ze dan maar Sauber opgekocht en Williams met een financiële kater en klantenmotor van Cosworth laten zitten.
