Pierre Gasly: "Max Verstappen is een uitstekend referentiepunt"

Red Bull Racing-coureur Pierre Gasly was te gast tijdens de persconferentie van de Spaanse Grand Prix. De Fransman kende tot nu toe een moeilijk en ongelukkig seizoen. Met een achtste plaats in Bahrein en een zesde plaats in China scoorde de Fransman tot nu toe twaalf punten, dat zijn er uiteindelijk dertien door het rijden van de snelste ronde tijdens de Chinese Grand Prix. Door een penalty moest Gasly in Baku achteraan starten.

De Fransman heeft een verklaring voor zijn stroeve seizoenstart: "Er zijn wat dingen gebeurd in het begin van het seizoen. Sommige dingen vielen niet echt onze kant op. Op dit moment voel ik wel progressie en ben in meer comfortabel in de auto. Het heeft er ook mee te maken dat het team mij helpt om me meer op mijn gemak te voelen, dat werkt nu beter. We zagen al vooruitgang in Baku, helaas had ik een uitvalbeurt daar, maar het gaat in elk geval de goede kant op."

Gasly is lovend over het werk van Honda en legt tevens uit wat de bedoeling was van de upgrade die Honda in Baku had meegebracht: "De Honda-upgrade van Baku was er voornamelijk op het gebied van betrouwbaarheid. Het liep zoals we verwacht hadden. Honda werkt keihard om ons van goede motoren te voorzien en hun werkwijze is fantastisch. Ze hebben op het gebied van betrouwbaarheid en performance enorme stappen gemaakt."

"Natuurlijk willen wij altijd meer zeker gezien Ferrari en Mercedes ook doorontwikkelen en nog steeds voor ons staan. We zullen uiteindelijk bij hun moeten aanhaken."

Max Verstappen als referentiepunt

De Fransman denkt dat Max Verstappen een uitstekend referentiepunt is voor zijn ontwikkeling als coureur. Gasly vertelde er het volgende over: "Ik heb altijd geweten dat Max een van de grootste talenten is die er rond rijdt. Hij is heel erg goed, hij haalt echt het maximale uit de auto en daarom is het ook goed voor mij om zijn teamgenoot te zijn. Hij heeft ervaring met Red Bull Racing, heeft ervaring met de auto en het is voor mij een uitstekend referentiepunt.

"Ik denk dat hij een geweldige job doet op dit moment", sloot de Red Bull Racing-coureur af.

Klopt wel. Als je kampioen wilt worden moet je hem verslaan. Maar dat gaat denk ik niemand meer lukken in dezelfde wagen. Hij had 1 inkom jaartje nodig op zijn 18e maar daarna was hij al duidelijk beter dan Ricciardo. Ook geen koekenbakker. dus ja het is een goed referentiepunt als je ooit voor de titel mee wilt gaan doen. Maar winnen doe je niet meer zo snel van hem.

  RBR heeft gewoon heel veel werk te doen, en heel erg snel.
  Ik zie sowieso Leclerc, maar met het juiste materiaal zelfs Stroll, hard op de deur bonzen.
  Het geld en de juiste stoeltjes maken in F1 nog steeds het verschil..

  Inderdaad,.en dat nadat hij Jack plooi breeduit uitlachte toen die hem op zijn plaats zette in false /true. Nu lacht hij niet meer zo uitgebreid maar geeft hij toe dat max hem uit zicht rijd. Nee, Max is geen optie voor ons pierrottje
