Albon merkt progressie: "Weet nu wat ik met de auto wil"

Als nieuwkomer in 2019 moest Alexander Albon even wennen aan de Formule 1. De coureur van Scuderia Toro Rosso stelt echter dat hij nu gewend is aan de bolide, maar dat het even duurde voor hij precies wist wat hij van de auto wilde.

Albon werd als een van de laatste coureurs toegevoegd aan de grid. Toro Rosso had nog een plekje voor open en haalde de Britse Thai weg bij het Formule E-team e.dams, waarvoor hij eigenlijk zou gaan rijden. De wintertests waren de eerste kennismaking van Albon met een Formule 1-auto en sindsdien merkt hij vooral fysiek dat hij flink vooruitgegaan is.

Albon merkt fysieke stap vooruit

"Fysiek gezien is het nu makkelijker", vertelde Albon na de tweede vrije training aan GPToday.net. "Mijn nek is na mijn tijd in de Formule 2 een stuk sterker geworden, maar na Bakoe is dit circuit nog steeds een schok voor je systeem. Hier heb je natuurlijk veel downforce nodig, dus fysiek gezien is dit ook een echt circuit."

"Ik voel me oké en goed op mijn gemak. Vooral qua rijden voel ik me meer op mijn gemak in de auto op hoge snelheid. Op lage snelheid voelt het voor mij een beetje hetzelfde aan. Ik weet nu wel echt wat ik van de auto wil. Tijdens de wintertests veranderden de monteurs iets en vertelde ik daarna of het goed was, maar nu weet ik wat ik wil en dat is wat we nu in VT1 en VT2 ook doen. We weten hoe we de auto willen laten opereren, maar het kostte wat tijd om daar te komen."

Albon ziet kleine verschillen in middenmoot

Albon eindigde de eerste dag op het Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya op de twaalfde positie, twee plaatsen achter teamgenoot Daniil Kvyat. Het viel de nummer 3 van het Formule 2-kampioenschap van 2018 op hoe dicht de middenmoot bij elkaar stond.

"Ik denk dat we het prima doen, maar we moeten opnieuw de balans in de auto zoeken. De auto heeft nu gewoon een andere manier van opereren en dat proberen wij nu de baas te worden. We zien ook hoe krap de middenmoot is, want er zit vijf, zes man binnen een tiende die allemaal van een ander team zijn. Ik denk absoluut dat we nog meer tijd uit deze auto kunnen halen."
