Russell wisselt versnellingsbak en krijgt vijf plaatsen gridstraf

De gifbeker is nog niet leeg bij Williams. George Russell crashte tijdens de derde vrije training en naar aanleiding daarvan moet de versnellingsbak van zijn FW42 gewisseld worden. Dat komt hem op een gridstraf van vijf plaatsen te staan.

Het seizoen van Williams verloopt tot nu toe verre van goed. Naast dat het team het tempo van de concurrentie niet bij kan houden, word er de afgelopen weken ook regelmatig schade gereden. In Azerbeidzjan reed Russell zijn bolide buiten zijn schuld kapot op een losliggende putdeksel, terwijl teamgenoot Robert Kubica hard crashte in de kwalificatie.

Russell beschadigt versnellingsbak bij crash

Ook in Spanje moesten de monteurs na een vrije training hard aan de slag om een Williams te repareren. Russell spinde in de slotfase van VT3 in de vierde bocht en zag een tocht door het grid eindigen tegen de bandenstapel. Na controle van de bolide bleek dat de versnellingsbak door die crash beschadigd is en vervangen moet worden. Dat komt de Brit op een gridstraf van vijf posities te staan.

Het lijkt dus heel waarschijnlijk dat Russell de race vanaf de laatste positie zal vertrekken. Direct na de vrije training bood hij op Twitter zijn excuses aan bij het team. "Sorry jongens. Ik pushte hard om de limiet te vinden en ik ging er net overheen. Het team werkt hard om de auto in de kwalificatie naar buiten te laten gaan."

  Van de 19e naar de 20e bedoel je zeker. Hij is sneller dan de Pool.

Williams doet het wel beter nog maar 4 tiende van plek 18 verwijdert. Afgelopen 4 races was dat ruim 1 seconde, Williams maakt stappen voorruit met name Russel dan. Kubica ruim 1.2 seconde langzamer dan Russel niet best....
